Suffolk County’s Coastal Resiliency Initiative  In 2015 Suffolk County completed its Comprehensive Water Resources Management Plan  Among other projects recommended in the plan four large sewer projects focused around south shore rivers emerged, including the following:  Carlls River  Connetquot River  Forge River  Patchogue River

  5. Proposed Sewer Project Goals  Provide sewer service to 7,000 parcels – 465 in Great River  The four sewer projects remove close to 860 pounds of nitrogen from the Great South Bay Watershed  Improve Water Quality in the Connetquot River and Great South Bay

  7. Purpose of These Projects  Protect Long Island’s Sole Source Aquifer from Nitrate Contamination  Reduce Nitrate Levels in Surface Waters  Reduce Occurrence of Harmful Algal Blooms  Restore Wetland and Seagrass Areas  Improve Coastal Resiliency

  8. Original Project Description  Comprised of the hamlet of Great River  Connect 465 parcels to municipal sewer system  Gravity Sewer System – Will connect to Southwest Sewer District  Remove 41 pounds per day of nitrogen from entering the groundwater

  10. Updated Project Description  Change from Gravity Sewers to Low Pressure Sewers  Benefits  Lower Costs than Gravity Sewers  Less Community Disruption  Less Utility Relocation

  11. Low Pressure Sewers Wastewater from throughout your home flows by gravity into the collection tank. Floats in the collection tank send a signal to the control panel to turn on the grinder pump. Thegrinder pump liquifies and then pumps wastewater through the low pressure force main (pipe) on your property to the low pressure force main in the public right-of-way.Ultimately, wastewater will be transmitted to the regional wastewater treatment facility. Low Pressure Sewer Systems convey wastewater from your home to the regional wastewater treatment facility. Unlike a gravity connection, Low Pressure Sewers use a small pump station located at each house to move wastewater through the transmission system. Door to Door Surveys  Notify via mailing and website of scheduled work  Two Man Survey Crews  Will have Photo ID  Obtain the Following Information  Topographic Information of the property  First Floor Elevation of your house/business  Sewer Line Invert Elevation  Take Pictures of the Property  Leave Flyer on how to measure your sewer line invert elevation, if you are not home or don’t want to allow the survey crew access.
