We will be creating an applique designbased on aletter of the alphabet This design will also use a variety of stitches
First we design an original letter To do this, you need: • 1-sheet of tracing paper • 1-block letter of your choice • 1-Pencil and eraser • 2-Short pieces of masking tape
How to choose your letter It should be the first letter of a word that is important to you. It could stand for a person or a pets name It could stand for an idea like love, peace or family It could stand for a place or a sport
You really love Albert so you choose A, the first letter of his name. Now you must Choose the Letter you want to design Lets say the first name of your dogis Albert A for Albert
Lay the letter in the center, then turn it over to the back A Lay the tracing paper on the table in front of you
A Tape the letter to the tracing paper Tape at the top and bottom
A Turn the tracing paper over, your letter will show through
A A First & Last name, section Write your name in the lower left hand corner of the tracing paper First & Last name, section
Graphic artists design letters for books, computer fonts, and advertising.
Any letter may have thousands of different shapes and still be recognizable AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
You can trace parts of the letter Take bites A and add bumps Using the pencil draw around theletter First & Last name, section
Like this A Not like this If it is a symmetrical letter be sure your design is symmetrical are First & Last name, section
Like this A Not like this No part of your design can be less than one square wide or long First & Last name, section
Like this A Not like this Your Design must touch the block letter at every point or corner First & Last name, section
A Finish your letter First & Last name, section
A I don’t like these bumps Too thin here I like the way the bottom part looks Now you should assess your design and decide what needs changing and what looks good! First & Last name, section
A Move your new design off to the side to assess your new design Place a new sheet of tracing paper over your design, trace what you like and change what you don’t like. First & Last name, section
A First & Last name, section
You must make at least four different designs for each letter you choose
Now we will transfer our design to fabric To do this, you need: • Your best letter design • on tracing paper • Straight pins, about-25 • 1-Pair of scissors
Now you must Choose the colors you want for the felt and burlap Lets say the letterAstands for the first name of your dog, Albert Albert is brown and white Albert has a red collar
For one of Albert’s colors you might pick white burlap For Albert’s collar You might choose red felt
Choose a piece of felt and a piece of burlap Be sure you like the way the way the colors look together
Pin the letter to a piece of felt Line up the side of the letter with the side of the felt Line up the top of the letter with the top of the felt
Pin the letter to a piece of felt You need a pin every inch or two around the letter
Slide pin through both the paper and the felt Then push the pin up onto the front of the paper The point of the pin is pushed to the back of the felt
Cut carefully on the pencil line Cut through both the felt and the paper
Remove the pins when you have finished cutting out the letter Then remove the paper
Vertical Not Horizontal Use the burlap vertically Pin your letter to the burlap Leave slightly more space below the letter Leave slightly more space below the letter Leave slightly more space below the letter
Now you must Choose the colors you want for the Yarn to stitch down the letter Lets say the letterAstands for the first name of your dog, Albert Albert is brown and white Albert loves to swim in blue water
For his color you might pick brown yarn For the water you might pick blue yarn
You may also choose the same color as the letter, if you don’t want the yarn to be emphasized
Thread your needle with the color of yarn that youhave chosen
Now put the Yarn through the threader First put the threader into the needles eye If you have trouble threading the needle try using the needle threader
Pull the yarn and needle threader back through the needles eye
Take the needle to the back of the burlap Poke the needle up through the burlap and the felt
