IT: Still One of the Fastest Growing Careers! • Bureau of Labor: Four of the 10 industries with the fastest expected wage and salary growth, and three of the 10 fastest growing occupations are computing related. • Computer related jobs in Ohio are expected to grow by over 40% between 2002-2012. (Ohio Dept. of Job and Family Services). • By 2012, there will be 1.5 million new jobs in IT” but based on current enrollments in IT programs, “we will only graduate half of the qualified candidates we will need.” (Microsoft Senior VP of Research) • Money Magazine ranked the top 10 jobs 1. Software Engineer …. 7. Computer IT analyst • Time recently rated Software Engineers as the 4th fastest growing job in America • 50 percent of the professional workforce is female (2004), but only 29 percent of the professional IT workforce was female. • Women make over 80 percent of the purchase decisions -- having more women inventing technology will help companies create products that better meet women's needs.

The Choices: An Alphabet Soup • Computer Engineering (CE) • Computer Science (CS) • Information Systems (IS) • Information Technology (IT) • Specialized degrees (Medical Informatics, Digital Design, etc.) • What do they all do? What skills do you need? Which one is right for you? • A few examples…

What skills do you need? • Math and Science • Especially critical for Computer Engineering and Computer Science, less so for Information Systems • People and Communication Skills • Particularly important for IS professionals • What is your strength? Do you like working primarily with the technology? Do you like technology but want to work with the users to solve problems?

What do you want to do? • Design and build hardware such as microprocessors and computers, cell phones, digital audio players, digital video recorders, alarm systems, or state-of-the-art medical devices? You may want to be a Computer Engineer. • Write software for novel smart devices, develop video games, devise secure communication protocols, or design the next generation of operating systems? You sound like a budding Computer Scientist. • Design and Build applications to revolutionize stock trading or travel reservations, design, build and manage worldwide data networks, lead global software development teams, consult with Fortune 100 companies to develop innovative technology solutions, be the founder of the next E-Bay or Amazon.com? You should consider a career in Information Systems. • Implement and operate corporate computing resources; create, maintain and secure web sites, databases and Internet servers; explore new technologies, thwart and detect intruders. hackers and spammers? Your interests match the profile of an Information Technology Professional.
