Slide 4:Why is it so important?

Successful promotion and programming for teens isn’t possible unless you know what appeals to them Lets teens know that you care about them and their interests Good icebreaker – start a conversation with your teen users – “Hey, did you watch Heroes last night?” You all keep up with the things that kids are reading, but are you aware of what they’re watching, listening to, wearing? You all keep up with the things that kids are reading, but are you aware of what they’re watching, listening to, wearing?

Slide 5:Why is it so important?

Helps predict fads and trends – have those materials in your library before they ask! Helps you remember how it feels to be a teen! Slide 6:What NOT to do!

Don’t… be a pop-culture snob Don’t… try to be what you’re not – acting cool when you’re not makes you look silly (and creepy)! Snobs– if we ignore popular trends we risk making ourselves superfluous and we alienate potential library customers and future library champions Don’t try to be what you’re not, but make your teens feel like you care about what they’re into – acting cool when you’re not makes you look desperate!Snobs– if we ignore popular trends we risk making ourselves superfluous and we alienate potential library customers and future library champions Don’t try to be what you’re not, but make your teens feel like you care about what they’re into – acting cool when you’re not makes you look desperate!
