What is Citrix? Citrix Metaframe XP is the application deployment system that NLU has chosen to deliver applications such as Banner to all NLU employees that require access. In addition, we can deploy many other applications. The most widely used of these applications is Banner. Here are some of the other applications available in Citrix. These are just some of the applications available to users through Citrix. Not all users will see all of these applications.
You Probably Already Have Citrix. If you do not, you can find the appropriate version of software at http://oit.nl.edu under “Applications”. Installation instructions are available at http://oit.nl.edu under “Documentation”.
Installing Citrix (on a PC) Click on the appropriate version of Citrix
Installing Citrix (on a PC) Click the Save button. Save the Citrix download file to your desktop.
Installing Citrix (on a PC) Double click the icon on your desktop labeled ica32.exe. Click the Next button and accept the default installation options. Note: You may have to reboot your computer once the installation has completed. You will now have an icon labeled “Citrix Program Neighborhood” on your desktop. Double click this icon to get started.
Configuring Citrix (on a PC) Click on the “Up” Button and you will see this window. Double Click the icon labeled “Find New Application Set”.
Configuring Citrix (on a PC) Choose “Wide Area Network from the pulldown menu and click Next. Click the “Server Location” button. Choose “TCP/IP” from the pulldown menu. Then click the “Add” button. Enter the following 3 IP Addresses then click “Next”. 192.217.56.190 192.217.56.191 192.217.56.192
Configuring Citrix (on a PC) Recommended display options are “256 Colors” and “Seamless Window”. Click “Next” then “Finish” and Citrix is ready for you to use. Double Click on “NLU Farm” to get started. Installation instructions are available at http://oit.nl.edu under “Documentation”.
How do I get started? Once the Citrix client has been installed and setup simply double click on the icon labeled “Citrix Program Neighborhood”. This is what your “Program Neighborhood” will look like.
How Can I Access My Files and Email? Simply double click on the application titled “NLU-Desktop”. Some of the applications within “NLU-Desktop” are:
Accessing Your Files After launching “NLU-Desktop”, you will see this desktop screen.
Accessing Your Files My Computer - Allows access to H: and I: drives. H: and I: drives are Network folders used for storing any data needing to be backed up. H: Drive – Network storage area for the current user only. (No other users can access this folder.) I: Drive – File sharing area for the department of the current user’s entire department. Local Drive – Your local hard drive (C: Drive) appears when you are logged into “NLU-Desktop” under “My Computer”. This allows you to access all of your local files. All files saved on your H: and I: drives are backed up every night.
Moving Files Between Citrix and Your Local Machine You can transfer files from your computer to your H: or I: drive as you would on your computer while your at the office. Start with double clicking on the “My Computer” icon.
Moving Files Between Citrix and Your Local Machine C$ on ‘Client’ (C:) is the hard drive on your own computer. You can drag and drop files between your H: or I: drives and your C: drive as you would if you were in your office.
Examples of Effective Uses of Citrix • Dial up users can gain access to H: and I: drives. • Remote users can keep their data on their H: drive as a backup. • Faster access to Microsoft Outlook 2000 for dial up users.
Accessing Your E-Mail Microsoft Outlook 2000 – The full version of Microsoft Outlook is available and can be used as an alternative to Outlook Web Access (http://nluexchange.nl.edu). This version of Microsoft Office provides access to all of the same features you have access to on your computer in your office.
