2. CASP Profile The California Association of School Psychologists, was founded in 1950 and is headquartered in Sacramento. CASP is the largest statewide organization of school psychologists in the nation. With membership of nearly 1,800 School Psychologists and educators, CASP represents the interest of the state’s school psychologists – professionals dedicated to improving the mental health and educational experience for all students.

CASP Vision Statement The Vision of the California Association of School Psychologists is to foster the social, emotional and academic wellbeing of all students by collaborating with families, school staff, and the community to ensure that students are educated in schools that support equity, access, and respect for all. Mission Statement CASP’s Mission is to provide high quality educational and leadership programs, that maintain high standards of practice for school psychologists through legislative advocacy, professional development, communications, publications, ethics guidelines, and direct services to members, to enable the growth and development of the profession, and to ensure safe, healthy, and successful outcomes for the children, schools and communities we serve.

CASP CASP has a long history of promoting the profession of school psychology and legislation and policies that are in the best interests of students from both academic and mental health perspectives. We strive to meet the needs of our members, and based on your feedback, we continue to make CASP more relevant to your needs as a school psychologist.

History • CASP was founded in 1950 and was the second school psychology state organization in the country. • The first President of CASP helped found NASP (20 years after CASP was founded). • First conference was at the College of the Pacific in Stockton (1950) – cost $2.00. CASP became an official organization three years later. • Started with 300 members now over 1700. Largest statewide organization and only one supporting a fulltime staff.

Contemporary School Psychology: Annual peer-reviewed journal on today’s issues in the profession. Representation in Sacramento: CASP dues go toward the services of a lobbying firm that works to ensure that school psychologists have a voice in education issues. CASP also strives to have members placed on specific boards, work groups and committees that affect school mental health services. CASP Resource and Position Papers: Provide current information on evidence based practices. Annual Convention and Spring Institute: CASP members receive major discounts to these and other CASP-sponsored events.

The CASP Mentoring Program pairs mentors and mentees to discuss those issues. Alumni Club: Retired members and those with an acute interest in school psychology have formed this exclusive club. Members are invited to special events at the annual convention and spring institute in exchange for their donations to the CASP PAC and work to ease the school psychologist shortage. Legislative Platform • The purpose of the 2015-2017 Legislative Platform is to support the Vision and Mission of CASP by establishing the Association’s legislative agenda for the upcoming legislative sessions. • This platform provides the foundation and scope of CASP’s legislative efforts deemed to be CASP’s priority issues for the 2015-2017 Legislative Sessions. • CASP publishes the Association’s Legislative Platform biannually. Historically and continuing to the present day, CASP has supported legislation to improve the education and related services for the children of all California schools. This includes all children in both general and special education programs. • CASP is one of the few state associations to employ a lobbyist to support school psychologists at the capitol in Sacramento. • CASP’s Legislative Platform can be found at http://casponline.org/legislative/

10. More Ways to Learn with CASP Conventions (Fall) Join over 1000 school psychologists and educators at the annual event. With the expo, networking and training opportunities you won’t be disappointed. Spring Institutes (Spring) Join CASP in northern California for the profession’s top trainers. Past trainings have included: Dr. Alfonso (XBASS), Dr. Mather (WJ IV), Dr. Feifer (FAR), Dr. Dehn (Executive Functioning) Webinars Information you need, from the comfort of your own home. Most courses are eligible for BBS and NCSP hours. New courses are continually added throughout the year. Examples include: Mental Health, RtI, Executive Functioning, Interventions, Autism, and legal issues. Affiliate Trainings (CEUs available) Participate in trainings locally with your regional affiliate. Other CEU Opportunities CASP holds workshops throughout the state to assist members who need to satisfy licensing requirements for LEPs, LPCCs, LMFTs and LCSWs. CASP is also a provider of professional development hours for NCSPs. As school psychologists, we have an ethical responsibility to update our skills and competencies through ongoing professional development. California School Psychology Foundation • The California School Psychology Foundation (CSPF) was established in 1998 as a separate, yet supporting, organization of the California Association of School Psychologists. • The Vision of the California School Psychology Foundation is to engage in the purposeful activity to create the scaffolding to build and sustain the image of the SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST and increase the visibility of the profession in the field. • The Mission and Purpose of the California School Psychology Foundation is to promote and advance the efficacy of School Psychology practice through scholarship and education, research and training, and outreach to educators, parents and the community to improve the wellbeing of children and youth. • The Foundation awards the Paul Henkinand the Cultural and Linguistic Diversity Scholarship at the annual CASP Fall Convention. Mini Grants are awarded each January.

14. Affiliates • School Psychologists who work in Sonoma County may not have the same continuing education needs as those working in San Diego County. Affiliates can cater to the needs of their members when planning workshops. • Through their partnerships with CASP, Affiliates can offer CEUs much closer to home than the CASP annual convention or spring institute. LEPs, LPCCs, LMFTs, LCSWs and NCSPs can get units/hours toward their license and certification renewals at Affiliate workshops. • Have a great intern who will have to leave once her internship is completed but she wants to stay in the area? Affiliates can informally make recommendations and chat about what employment opportunities may be available at the school district down the way. • Affiliates are not all work and no fun. Several have social events where School Psychologists can meet new friends, catch up with old friends and just visit.

15. National, State, or Local Affiliates – who to choose… • All of the organizations provide benefits to you as a School Psychologist. It is ideal to first support your affiliate organization, a direct benefit to you locally. Next, supporting CASP advocates for your specific needs in California.
