Medical Trips • VIDA Medical trips offer hands-on experience including: -Patient Interviews -Taking Vitals -Giving Injections and Vaccinations -Working in the Pharmacy - As well as: blood sugar testing, quick dip urinalysis, and pap smears
Dental Trips • VIDA Dental Trips give students a chance to practice dental procedures • Patient Exams -Teeth Cleaning - Tooth Extractions - Sealants - Fillings
Vet Trips • VIDA Veterinary Trips allow students to work directly with animals • Castration Surgeries - Grooming - Work with large animals - Vaccinations - Administering Catheters - Teeth Cleanings
Homestays • VIDA Volunteers stay at a variety of hotels during their stay as well as with Homestay Families • Why Homestays: • VIDA aims to hire small independent businesses and families in the counties we work in • This saves the volunteers money • Promotes the economy of the countries we work in • Gives the volunteers a chance to experience the culture firsthand
The Families • VIDA visits every house • VIDA meets with every family • Volunteers are in pairs with a separate room • Real Costa Rican food • They love to host students
VIDA Volunteers Work Hard and Play Hard Too! • White Water Rafting • Canopy Tours • Dancing • Horseback Riding • National Parks • Beaches • Snorkeling • Volcanoes • Water Sports • Bungee Jumping
Program Fees $1,695.00 12 nights and 13 days $1,395.00 8 nights and 9 days ($100.00 app fee credited to total amount paid) • VIDA Staff Pick-up and drop off at Airports as well as In country transportation • Accommodations with host families and hotels • Meals: On average 2 meals per day during clinic days and 1 per day on non-clinic days • Full day orientation and Medical/Dental/Veterinary Manual • 24 hour Bilingual guides and health professionals • Survival Spanish class
Program Fees Contd • Pre-adventure coordination, support, and itinerary planning • All medicine, equipment, supplies, and professionals needed to complete successful veterinary, dental and medical clinics • Statement of volunteer service hours; Letters of recommendation will be assessed on a case by case basis • Evening group activities • Cultural and Recreational activities • Border and Customs fees • Post adventure follow-up
What is not included in the program fees • Airfare • Personal Spending Money • Academic Credit • Laundry • Internet/telephone fees • Airport departure tax
Application Process • Fill out the online application via the website and pay your $100.00 application fee (Paypal) to guarantee your position on the team. • Application deadlines are typically 90 to 45 days prior to trip start date. • You will receive an email confirming your position on the team soon after enrolling. • Once teams are full, we post that info on the website and close applications for that team.
Flight • Schedule flight to arrive by 2pm, first day of your trip and your departure flight anytime the last day of the trip • Students: If your campus is organizing your VIDA trip it is best to fly down as a group • Enrolling independently: VIDA will provide flight information about other VIDA volunteers on your trip • Try Travelocity or Sidestep for discount airfare • Popular airlines here: Delta, American Airlines, TACA/Lacsa, US airways and Continental • VIDA Staff will await you outside of the arrival area with a “VIDA” sign.
Donations • VIDA strongly encourages all volunteers to gather/bring $100 worth of donations. • Donations of medicines are needed to enhance our basic pharmacy • Donations of clothing, toys, stickers, and shoes etc are needed for patients as well • Dental Donations include: toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, gauze, and gloves • Veterinary Donations include: gloves, gauze, sutures, metal choke collars, leashes, and kennels • A list of medications and other useful donations can be found on our website at www.vidavolunteertravel.org
