  1. What is Azure Database Migration Service? What is Azure Database Migration Service? Azure Database Migration Service (DMS) provides fully managed assistance for any business migrating from their on-premises databases to one of the many Azure databases. You can use Database Migration Service to migrate any type of database or data type and for any type of migration. It supports the migration of numerous database types, including SQL Server, MySQL, Oracle, and PostgreSQL. Azure Database Migration Service makes it easy to move data, objects, and schemas. DMS also allows you to automate migrations using PowerShell. The database migration service includes a data migration wizard. This unique tool allows users to assess migrations and identify issues that may be preventing a successful migration. It also helps identify features that are not supported or may be adversely affected. The assessment then provides a readiness checklist and steps and provides a report with optimization recommendations. Service Models Azure Database Migration Service has two service tiers: Standard and Premium. The Standard tier provides access to up to 4 vCores and supports offline migration only. Designed for small to medium workloads. The Premium tier also provides access to 4 vCores but supports both online and offline migrations. This service tier is typically used for large, mission-critical workloads. Note that offline migration requires the user to make a copy of the source database and upload it to the destination. This means that downtime is an important part of the migration process, at least until the new cloud database is ready to support your workloads. Online migration, on the other hand, means that there is a data stream between the source and target databases. This allows data to be continuously transferred while changes are cached for asynchronous replication. Ultimately, you’re on-premises and cloud databases will be identical while you offload your workload to a new cloud database. This way there is no app downtime. Azure Database Migration Service Pricing In general, like the service model above, Azure Database Migration Service has two tiers: Standard and Premium. Standard is free. It is designed for "one-off" migrations and situations where downtime is not critical. The Premium Tier is currently free for the first 6 months, then $0.37/hour. Premium supports both online and offline migrations with access to 4 Virtual Core compute models. This updated tier is designed for "continuous migration" and workloads that cannot tolerate downtime.
