INFORMATION • The primer is that essential support we give paint that helps it to adhere and last for long. • A primer has many functions and despite the added costs, most contractors would tell you that it is well worth it. • So, if you are planning to paint your home, consider using a primer as an undercoat, especially water based primers for interiors. • No matter what the surface — metal, wood or cement — a primer is recommended if you want a polished and professional job. • There are many types of primers available in the market today. • Primers today can broadly be divided into water-based and oil-based. • Water-based primers are popular because they have certain advantages over oil-based primers.
WHY DO YOU NEED THE PRIMER? • There are many reasons we need a primer on our walls. • A primer seals a surface, making it even, so that we can get a smooth application of paint. • For porous surfaces, primers become even more important. • The surface ‘drinks’ up this first coat, so that the paint can then be applied without any trouble. • For surfaces like wood, with high permeability, a primer acts as sealing surface. • It stops marks and tannins from staining the surface the paint. • In short, a primer prepares a surface for the coating of a paint. • As in case of make-up, primer is the undercoat you need to prepare the surface for the paint to be applied on. • The primer not only prepares the surface, it also ensures that the paint has a long life. • In general, the paint is less likely to peel or chip if it is applied over a primer undercoat.
WHEN SHOULD YOU USE PRIMER? • Primer should be applied before applying the paint. • If you are planning to paint your home, use a primer like water based primer for interiorson the unfinished surface, just after a basic cleaning of the walls. • The primer should ideally be put on a clean, grease-free surface. • The walls can be lightly dusted and sanded before the paint is applied. • If the primer makes the surface a little rough, it can be sanded lightly. • The paint is then applied to the smooth surface. Paint should be applied within a week of the primer coat. • The primer coat also makes the painting easy to execute.
WATER- BASED PRIMERS • There are differs types of primers available today. • In general an oil-based primmer is use with an oil-based paint and a water-based primer is used with a water-based paint. • Within water-based primers, there are again diffident varieties available in the market today. • There are many advantages of using water-based primers: • Flexibility • Quick drying • Easy to clean • Superior finish
FLEXIBILITY • Oil-based primers are usually used only for oil-based paints, while water-based primers have wider applications. • It is also suitable for acrylic or latex-based paints. • This means you can go with one water based primer for interiors for almost every surface in the interior of the house. • Oil-based primer will generally be used only for door, windows, or any wooden and metal surfaces. • Since the water-based primer will work with almost all other kind of paints, it will be used for the larger surface areas of walls and ceilings.
QUICK DRYING • This is just elementary physics. Water dries faster than oil. • Hence, the water-based primer also dries very quickly. • In the right environmental conditions (very humidity is low) it can dry in less than an hour! • This means that we can finish a painting job quickly. Where contracting is priced in hours, this can save us both money and time.
EASY TO CLEAN • One of the functions of a primer is to provide a clean surface on which paint can be applied. • A primer covers up stains that are difficult to remove. • But what happens when we accidentally manage to dirty the primer coat? • We have to clean the primer surface before we can continue with the paint. • An oil-based primer has to be cleaned by turpentine. • However, Warm soapy water is sufficient when it comes to cleaning a water-based primer.
SUPERIOR FINISH • Today water based primer for interiors also has a far superior finish. • Water-based acrylic primers have a clear, glossy surface. • Its better adhesion also improves the overall finish.
