  2. Introduction A universal definition of ‘good ergonomics’ doesn’t exist. Even so, most institutional guidelines reach the same physiological conclusions. Most also share a consensus on what ‘ergonomic’ actually means! ChairsFX has verified those principles in practice. All of that info combined yields the ultimate ergonomic seating definition — by 2024 standards.

  3. Problem • Solution 1 • Solution 2 • Problems • The human body is not designed to sit for long periods. In 1973, NASA discovered a solution while observing astronauts in outer space. They noticed that while working in zero gravity, the astronauts would naturally fall into neutral sitting positions. Further research revealed these as the healthiest way for humans to sit for long periods. • The human body is not designed to remain in seated positions for long periods. Doing so flattens the lower back curve and distorts the spine. Over time, the result is pain, stiffness, and chronic fatigue. • NASA discovered that neutral sitting positions maintained the integrity of a healthy standing spine. As a result, astronauts could maintain seated positions for long periods without suffering discomfort. • Ergonomic seating emerged in the early 1990s to promote neutral postures. To qualify as ‘ergonomic', a chair needs adjustable lumbar support, adjustable armrests, and a reclining backrest.

  4. Ergonomic Concepts • Reclining backrest • Adjustable Lumbar Support • Adjustable Armrests • Adjustable lumbar support applied 4 cm deep slightly above the beltline maintains a healthy lower back curve. • Adjustable armrests provide extra bracing to maintain a straight spine while sitting. By pressing down with their forearms, users gain extra support to hold their torso up against gravity. • A reclining backrest serves two purposes. First, it helps a seated body move. Second, it lets users customize their support angles. For healthy deskwork, a recline angle of 100-110° works best.

  5. Putting it together • The objective is to maintain neutral postures while you sit. Adjustable lumbar support, adjustable armrests, and a reclining backrest support that. With that in mind, follow these steps for best results. • Tuck your hips deep into the seat • Keep your feet planted • Adjust your lumbar support to maintain a healthy lower back curve.
