  2. Believe it or not.. • There’s nothing more exciting and entertaining than owning and racing a thoroughbred in Australia. • Horse racing in Australia has emerged as one of the most celebrated and enjoyed sports. • Not only does it provide immense thrill and pleasure, but it also brings in big money, if fared skilfully.

  3. However.. • Success in thoroughbred business almost utterly depends on the potential of the racehorse. • How the horse is cared, fed and trained is the key to a positive horse ownership experience.

  4. Check out next slides >> Here are sne tips on caring for your racehorse and looking after its welfare needs.

  5. Shelter Unlike wild horses that don’t need a man-made shelter and find comfort under shady trees, thoroughbreds require a grassy space large enough for them to move around comfortably. Also being thin skinned, thoroughbreds need a well-built shelter to protect them from extremely hot and cold weather.

  6. Feeding Racehorses tend to have a fast metabolism, and thus require a high energy, low-fibre diet for optimum growth. While the amount of hay is considerably less than what’s given to non-racing horses, foods rich in starch including oats, corn and soybean must be fed for the provision of energy.

  7. Training and Activities Thoroughbreds are bought and owned for their athletic potential. For a racehorse owner to win races with their horse and bring in potential wealth, it is important that the horse is fit and healthy. The racehorse must go through a complete and thorough training process in order to serve the athletic function.

  8. Common Health Problems Protecting your horse from common health complications and diseases is an essential part of racehorse care and training. The horse owner or keeper should have a basic knowledge of equine first aid and the health problems horses are prone to.
