  2. Background (pg. 1) • Ancient Iran (Southwestern Iran) • 539 B.C. - 330 B.C. • Babylon fell to the Persians in 539 B.C.

  3. Social Organization (pg. 2) • Women cared for sons till 5 years of age • Men cared for sons from 5 years and older • Persia was divided into 20 provinces • Each province was ruled by a governor called a “satrap” • “Satraps” were in charge of security and army

  4. Belief System (pg. 3) • Most Persians believed in “Shīʿite Islam” (Shiite) • Before the Muslim conquest, most persians believed in “Zoroastrianism”

  5. Advancements/Success (pg. 4) • Hanging Gardens of Babylon • Contribution to mathematics -They created what is known today as Algebra -Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi • The Persian Empire’s military was feared as the most advanced • First to have a Navy and were the first to use gunpowder

  6. Decline (pg. 5) • Persia fell when Darius III was in power in 334 B.C. • Alexander the Great of Macedonia invades Persia • Darius III loses three battles and is defeated by Alexander in 331 B.C.
