  1. Arithmetic with integers (Day 1) Add, subtract, multiply, and divide

  2. Why do I need this? • Integers are used in money, sports, Jeopardy, battle strategies, and give and take. • California State standard: NS 1.2: Add integers AF 1.3: Simplify expressions • High school exit exam (CAHSEE)

  3. Silently, on your paper name 4 opposites Share your opposites with your group. What is the math opposites? Add-subtract, multiply-divide, positive-negative What would be the opposite of 3? Think don’t speak -3 :When you add opposites you will always get 0.

  4. A B The heroes are the _____ because… The villains are the _____ because… Adding and subtracting When you are adding and/or subtracting integers* pretend that you have heroes and villains. *Integer: all whole numbers and their opposites Ex: {…, -3. -2.00, -1, 0, 1, 4/2, 3, …} Non examples: {3.4, 3.987, ½, ¼, etc}

  5. Examples: 4+ -3 is the same as 4 heroes and 3 villains after they fight what happens (whenever a villain and a hero fight each other they both are eliminated) • In Heroes and Villains explain what these look like • -4 + 5 • 3 + 2 • -4 + -5 • 4 – 5 • -5 – 2 Turn to your neighbor and see if you have the same explanations.

  6. 4+ -3 is the same as 4 heroes and 3 villains after they fight what happens (whenever a villain and a hero fight each other they both are eliminated) The Heroes win, there will be one Hero left. 4 + -3 = 1 • Do the next problems on your own: • -4 + 5 • 3 + 2 • -4 + -5 • 7 – 9 • -3 – 2 Look at your neighbors paper and compare your answers

  7. White boards

  8. Turn to your neighbor and share your paragraph be prepared to read them in front of the class • Write a paragraph about how to solve an integer expression using villains and heroes.

  9. EXIT Ticket(write on a new piece of paper, this will be turned in at the end of the period) Write another way that you think will work to with positives and negatives without using heroes and villains. EXIT
