  1. DTB Coaches Symposium Gottingen 2008 Serve, rally and score for adults Mark Tennant inspire2coach ltd

  2. The facts • According to the TIA, the lack of growth in the tennis industry is due to increased competition from other leisure activities (TIA, 2003).

  3. Reasons why adults play less frequently (LTA 2006) Base: 43

  4. The facts • Tennis is good at attracting players, but poor at retaining them. It costs six times more to attract a new customer than to retain an existing customer (Gerson 1999). • In the case of the tennis industry, where retention of new players is a serious problem, economic success is dependent on the retention of existing participants who have a demonstrated commitment to the game

  5. ITF Tennis…Play and Stay campaign objectives • To work with the major nations to attract and retain more people in tennis • To redefine how coaches introduce the game to starter players • Particular emphasis on retention • Work closely with the tennis manufacturers • Share best practice

  6. Overview of ITF Tennis…Play and Stay campaign 1. ‘Tennis is a sport for all’ 2. ‘Slower balls, smaller courts, easy game’ 3. ‘Tennis is easy and fun if you serve, rally and score from the first lesson’ 4. ‘Tennis is healthy’

  7. 1. Tennis is a sport for all • Emphasis on starter players • Assumption that competition is for better players • Emphasis on conviviality (geselligkeit)

  8. 2. Slower balls, smaller courts, easy game • Slower balls and smaller courts are not just for children • Ideal for starter adults to help them learn to play the game more easily

  9. « A chacun son match »(A match for everyone) • Official competition is not adapted to tennis • Newcomers: • many women are not attracted by official competition • little girls are not happy with playing matches • people feel they are not able to play a real match • AND YET… • The aim of tennis is to play points…..

  10. « A chacun son match »(A match for everyone)

  11. 3. Tennis is easy and fun if you serve, rally and score from the first lesson • It is often assumed that what starter players need is more technical information • Playing the game is the most important thing – what you do rather than how you do it • Technical intervention is important but it should be appropriate and relevant

  12. Changing the playing environment is often more effective than trying to change the way players play • Orange and green balls overcome challenges of: • time • height and speed of bounce • 11 or 18m courts overcome challenges of: • court coverage • distance to target (power/control)

  13. Research from the TIA Research from the TIA tells us that in the US, many adults had coaching and said that their game got worse!

  14. 4. Tennis is healthy Exercise is good for you…… ……but is it attractive?!

  15. Proven to be one of the healthiest sports (Pluim 2007) • One of the key reasons for participation • Health benefits affected by: • Time and access • Type of ball used • Amount and type of technical intervention • Cardio Tennis

  16. Growing world-wide problems • Obesity • Diabetes • Cardiovascular disease • Major risk factors • Lack of exercise • Obesity • Hyperlipidemia • Increasing popularity of non-active leisure activities

  17. What adults want from tennis - immediate success • Internet; drive-in McDonalds • Wanting quality quickly; hard to change what people want, so change what is offered • Wanting success - trends in recent years have been towards sports with small learning curves • Different coaching approach!

  18. What adults want from tennis - convenience • Many people are cash rich but time poor! • Increasing popularity of activities which can be done at any time • Must fit in with work and family time • Shorter lessons and competition • Choice of times

  19. What adults want from tennis - social interaction • Enjoyment of activity and exercise with others • More and more single people • Research shows that you are more likely to continue an activity if introduced to 6 others during first visit • Description of standards – ITN/TEXX

  20. On court session • Serve, rally and score from the first lesson • Slower balls and smaller courts • Balancing technical and tactical intervention Thank you
