  2. What is an access key? • Simply put, a passcode is a type of password that does not need to be entered, protected, or remembered. Sounds great, right? But then, how do you authenticate yourself when logging into your accounts? Well, simply by unlocking your device. • On a more technical level, access keys are based on the web authentication standard and use public key cryptography. That means that when you create a new account on a website or app, your device will create a pair of cryptographic keys. These keys are incredibly complex and unique to your account. The public key is stored on the website, while the private key, which is the authentic key, resides securely on your device.

  3. How to create passcodes on an iPhone, iPad or Mac Getting started with passcodes on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is easy. • That being said, you should implement a few things: • Enable iCloud Keychain on your device as this is where all your passkeys will be stored. • Update to iOS 16, iPadOS 16, macOS Ventura, or tvOS 16, or later. • Make sure your browser supports passkeys. If you’re using Safari or Chrome, you’re golden.

  4. How to enable access keys • The first is the first. Navigate to Settings > Passwords > Password Options. On a Mac, open System Settings to find this. • Make sure “Autofill Passwords and Passcodes” is turned on and check that “iCloud Passwords and Keychain” is enabled.

  5. How to create an access key • I’m using a Google account as an example below to demonstrate exactly how to create and save a passcode on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. • On your Apple device, open Safari or Chrome and visit myaccount.google.com. From the dashboard, select the “Security” tab. • Under the “How to sign in to Google” heading, look for “Passwords” and tap it. You may be asked to enter your account password to verify your identity here. • To generate a new passcode, tap the “Create a Passcode” button located at the bottom. Then tap “Continue” to continue. • On the next screen, you will be asked to save the passkey to iCloud Keychain. Tap “Continue” to authenticate using Face ID or Touch ID. If you have not set up a biometric option, enter your password. • That’s all! You have successfully created and saved a passcode for your Google account on your Apple device. You can now sign in to your Google Account simply by using facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, or your password. You can also share your passwords securely with your friends and family.
