Forinstance,SpringerNatureandElsevierlaunchedtrialprogramsin2016,whichenableresearcherstopublish andsharetheirpapers.However,APCsareincreasingtoo,whichisdetrimentaltootherpublishers.Oneofthe biggestconcernsisthatshiftingtoanAPCsystemfromsubscriptionfeesmayimpedeglobalparticipation. OAJournalswithLowerAPCs:Sustainable? APCshavegrowninrecentyears,byasmuchas6%.Inaddition,thetrendofAPCsismovingtowardstraditional publisherssuchasNatureorCell.OAjournalsarenottheonlyoneswhoembraceAPCs.Hybridjournalshave followedthetrend,albeithighercharges.However,theAPCsofOAjournalsarerisingfasterthanthethoseof hybridjournals.TheaverageAPCisbetweenUSD1,418and2,097.HybridandOAjournalscontributeto80%of theAPCexpenditure.TheaverageAPCofahybridjournalisover£500higherthantheaverageAPCofafullopen accessjournal.
