Tel: +252 24424281 Livestock are the main source of livelihood for the Somaliland people, job opportunities for more than 70% of the population and accounts for about 60% of GDP. Accounts for up to 85% of the total export earning. It contributes to government revenues and provides employment to a wide range of veterinary professional and other services. It’s also the main source of nutrition for Somalilanders.
Somaliland is an important livestock export country and the main markets are the oil rich countries of the Arabian peninsula mainly Saudi Arabia. Sheep and goats exports were the largest before the ban of 2001. The Kingdom of SA lifted the ban of the Somali livestock in 2009
The main livestock export port in the Horn of Africa is Berbera port and the quarantine was fully rehabilitated by Saudi livestock exporter with an Arabian Gulf States Co. It has a good veterinary laboratory in a accordance of the international standards and OIE Regulations and the importing countries.
Hargeisa Central Veterinary Laboratory was equipped by SAHSP, TERRA NOUVA AND FAO. The laboratory is involved in; Somaliland Resources base and Economy Disease investigation and confirmation

Somaliland has had a long history of live animal export to the Arabian Gulf State through the Berbera port. These exports have experienced a series of trade embargos due to suspicious diseases like Rift Valley Fever (RVF), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) and suspected presence of Rinderpest. The bans adversely affected the income and livelihood of pastoralists families and the national economy in general
The livestock export for the last ten years through Berbera ports to the Arabian Countries has been documented.

For the last 2-3 years animals exported from Berbera to KSA via Djibouti
