The purpose of the KTHR Tobacco Policy is to foster an environment that protects staff, clients and the public from second-hand smoke, to reinforce the norm of being tobacco-free, and to provide help & support to staff & clients who wish to stop using tobacco products
Client Cessation • Single most effective step to lengthen & improve patient/client’s lives • KTHR Healthcare Professionals can play a key role in motivating & supporting patients/clients to quit tobacco • KTHR Healthcare Professionals can intervene in a sensitive, non-judgmental manner about the importance of cessation • With cessation intervention, there will be: - a significant reduction in # of tobacco users - a decrease in tobacco related disease - a lowering of healthcare costs

Community Based Programs • Provider education in tobacco cessation support (PACT) • Public health nurses, Therapies, PHC, • Physicians, NPs • Pharmacists • Provider training-3 telehealth sessions • 93 trained • DVD was distributed to all Directors of Community Services providers in order to train new employees over time • A review was done in mid 2012 and due to low turnover in most departments the DVD had been used by only a few www.kelseytrailhealth.ca

Physicians Support • Community Pharmacist and Pfizer rep travelled to each clinic in the region • Presented the KTHR policy • Offered a video presentation on cessation • Advised of the KTHR staff support program • Provided the simple handout regarding KTHR + other services for cessation www.kelseytrailhealth.ca
Sustainability-Successes • Acute care regional implementation –led by Director Acute Care Services • Health provider education/support led by Addictions Services and Primary Health Care • Employee Support Program led by HR • Signage/property issues – Building Services • Provincial Tobacco Strategy www.kelseytrailhealth.ca
