  1. 2.2a Farming NEW KEY GEOGRAPHY Connections pages 28–29 What types of farming are there in Britain? The three main types of farming in Britain are arable, pastoral and mixed. Arable farmers grow crops. Pastoral farmers rear animals, mostly cows and sheep. In mixed farming, crops are grown and animals are reared in the same area. The type of farming that is best for an area depends on several physical and human factors. ? 1 Working with a partner, complete the Venn diagram on Activity Sheet 2.2b. Sort the statements below, writing each statement’s number into the most appropriate circle. Be careful! Some statements may fit in more than one sector. Grow crops like wheat, barley, potatoes and carrots. Sell wool, lamb and mutton at the local market. Two herds of cows: one for milk and dairy products; the other for beef. Grow crops and raise livestock. Cover large areas of countryside. Soils are thin and have little goodness in them. Good roads and transport links. Good quality soil. Flat land with deep, fertile soil and a warm climate. A warm, moist climate. A climate that is neither too wet nor too dry. Quite well drained land that is either flat or gently sloping. Near to markets. Sheep that feed mainly on grass, heather and poor-quality vegetation. Perishable crops. Use modern machinery and high technology. Extra money from tourists. Have an interrupted night’s sleep in spring. Have few workers. Land that is too steep to raise cattle or grow crops. Use refrigerated transport. Use natural stone for their buildings. Crops that are heavy to transport. Have high rainfall figures. Take their own products to market. Have huge sheds for machinery. Use large quantities of fertilisers and pesticides. Have ditches, dykes and pumping units to control water levels. Pay vet fees. Have a problem with foxes. Welcome genetic modification.
