Economic Activity Workshop Workshop 1: Figuring out differences in economic activity across ethnic groups Wednesday, May 16th 2007 Joanna Rozanska, Nestor Arcia Montes de Oca, Lee Williamson
Overview of presentation • Introducing the topic and the project • Overview of economic activity indicators • Problems with data, areas and other concerns • Workshop practical – introducing the web-tool • Discussion (are there any differences, is there any change over time?) • Further resources (given in workshop pack)
Project Ethnic Minority populations and the Labour Market: Analysis of the 2001 Census by L. Simpson, K. Purdam, A. Tajar, E. Fieldhouse, V. Gavalas, M. Tranmer, J. Pritchard and D. Dorling http://asp.ccsr.ac.uk/dwp/ (portal with a report, other documentation and the profile-maker) • Census review for ‘neighbourhoods’: • Based on Census data (sub-national indicators) • Data available for all census areas in 1991 and 2001
Key indicators • Employment rate:all employed, % of whole population excluding retired • Unemployment rate: unemployed, % of economically active • Economic activity:all employed and unemployed, % of whole population excluding retired • Part-time working:part time employees, % of employees • Permanent Sickness/Disability:not working due to permanent sickness or disability, % of whole population excluding retired • Low educational achievement:lacking any qualifications, % of population • High educational achievement:with degree or equivalent professional qualification, % of population
Indicators for theworkshop We are going to focus on employment in the workshop session: Employment: only those who are working (does not include those seeking work) Unemployment: those who are “actively looking for paid work in the past four weeks” and available to start work in the next twoweeks
Problems to consider • Boundaries of neighbourhoods • Data only from two time-points (Censuses 1991 and 2001) • Previously no questions on ethnicity • Ethnic groups classifications
Plans for the practical • Explore the website and the profile-maker • Check employment rates with the focus on Pakistani and Bangladeshimen and women using “Neighbourhood select” option • for Manchester (Moss Side) andthen compare with Didsbury • Check national expected values for males and females 25+ • Write down main observation (Pakistani and Bangladeshi compared with All) • Combine areas of Moss Side and Didsbury • Analyse and discuss the results
Questions to consider • Is there an ethnic penalty? • What may cause differences in economic activity when discrimination is considered? • Has there been a change between 1991 and 2001? • Do these patterns seem to be persistent over time or not? (discuss…) • Any interesting results, observations etc.?
