Difference Between Acidic Dyes and Basic Dyes Acid dyes based on a salt of a sulfuric, carboxylic or the phenolic organic acid. The salts are often sodium or ammonium salts. Basic dyes are cationic (+ve charged) and so will react with the material that is (-ve) negatively charged. Basic dyes are usually applied to Acrylic fibers. Here you know the basic difference between Acidic Dyes and Basic Dyes. • Dyes are coloring agents that give attractive shades to the fabric. With the advancement in technology, wide varieties of dyes are being used. They not only add colors but improve the texture and appearance of the fabric as well. Based on their properties, dyes are classified into several categories. For example, the two classifications; acidic dye and the basic dye. •
Acidic dyes Experts say that these dyes are quite useful in staining fabric that is made from protein fibers. The binding of acidic dyes is the best with animal hair, e.g. alpaca hair or wool hair. Acid dyes show a high affinity towards polyamide fibers also. • As far as their chemical structure is concerned, then most of the acid dyes are sodium salts of sulphonic acid. • They consist of salts of carboxylic acid, phenolic acid or sulfuric acid. •
Acidic dyes are negatively charged. Hence, they work on the tissue component which is positively charged. • Acid dyes contain the single azo group. The size of the acid dye molecule is bigger as compared to the basic dye. Dying is done in an acidic medium. • Acid dyes form colored and colorless anions and cations respectively in the aqueous solution. The washing fitness of the acidic dye ranges between two and five. •
Basic dyes These dyes are positively charged. Therefore, they get associated with the tissue components that are negatively charged. • Constructed mostly from cationic salts of bases the basic dyes change the appearance of the fabric and make it attractive. • Though basic dyes are also ionic, but they are not similar to acid dyes or direct dyes. Basic dyes produce two types of ions; colored cations and colored anions. •
Free subtracted amino groups form the coloring substance. • In the case of basic dyes, there is no azo group. However, there is a substitute amino group in this case. Dying is done in the neutral medium. • Basic dyes form colored cations and colorless anions in the aqueous solution. The washing fitness of basic dye is between four and five. • Acidic or basic, the fundamental purpose of the dye is to make the product visually appealing. Which dye is suitable for a particular manufacturing process? Well, the question doesn’t have a straightforward answer. •

Based on the parameters mentioned before, technicians compare different dyes and choose one that best fits.
