  2. The advisor is not a substitute for the school counselor!

  3. Advising v. Guidance v. Counseling • Guidance: The help all students receive from teachers, parents, community members, and others to assist with educational and career development. • Counseling: The help some students receive from credentialed professional to overcome personal and social barriers to learning. • Advising: A process to help all students develop awareness and skills about themselves, career and personal options, and to strengthen decision-making abilities.

  4. How are advisors involved? • Facilitate delivery of LINKS lessons • Establish a personal relationship with students that supports and encourages them as they go through high school • Develop and support a partnership with parents/guardians to encourage student progress

  5. Before Advising classes begin, Advisors need to…. • Complete Advisor training • Become familiar with Advisor responsibilities • Become familiar with the LINKS resources at the website Lesson Plans, etc. • Complete an evaluation • Students and Advisors must complete an online pre-LINKS Program survey prior to October 1st

  6. How to implement LINKS • LINKS is a facilitated learning experience. You support and encourage students’ discussion! • Your LINKS coordinator will provide copies of each lesson plan and handouts in time for you to prepare. • Lessons are also available online at http://wvde.state.wv.us/counselors/links/

  13. Assessing LINKS Lessons • After each session, advisors complete the online Advisor Log available on the Web site found under the Evaluation Table in the Advisor section. • Take time to complete the Advisor Log as soon as possible after the session
