  1. The Importance of Great Dental Care Can Not Be Stressed Enough Dentists enter our lives at a very young age, often. Just as small children get used to the doctor in their lives, they are exposed to the dentist when they are young, some sooner than others. Parents teach children to brush, they are taught a lot about their teeth and the importance of dental health at school, and they get used to the regular, scheduled visits to the dentist. Of course this goes on right into the senior years and old age: the importance of great dental care can never be stressed enough. If the child - or as we grow older - does not follow the best routines and proper regimen there is a good chance he/she may develop dental problems, some less and others more serious. It is a fact of life but, fortunately, there will always be good advice and help available – if we act in time. Think, for example, of certain dental issues that require the intervention of a good dentist such as making sure your fillings are effective, or the dentist that ensures your teenager receives good treatment to straighten their teeth – or, for example, the endodontist that specializes in treating inflamed tooth pulp, the part inside the tooth, underneath the enamel. The tooth pulp is the centre of the tooth and can get infected and inflamed. This is a soft substance that has blood-vessels, tissue and nerves and, when inflamed and not treated, can lead to various problems with the tooth which may necessitate extraction. Pulpitis (a condition that affects the tooth pulp) will, most likely, be diagnosed by your family dentist who will check your teeth as part of a regular visit to see if this is an issue – or they will diagnose this when they test your teeth for sensitivity, also to cold and heat, and after having taken X-rays, they will refer you to the services of the endodontist who will take it further and decide what the best treatment is. The endodontist is a specialistdentist that specifically concentrates on the field of endodontics, i.e. those dentists that specialize in tooth pulp treatment and the best procedures to help patients with issues of pain and to save their teeth when pulpitis is a problem. These treatments are generally referred to as the root canal treatments, and even though the family dentist can do these, the endodontist is a specialist that has further training and the

  2. experience of working in this field every day. The specialist will open up the area where treatment is needed and make sure that the pulp is properly cleaned and then make sure the root canal is shaped correctly and fill and seal the area so that a crown or other method can be used to protect the tooth in future. The endodontist may offer his/her services as an independent specialist, or they may indeed be a member of a greater dental practice. Some dental services do indeed offer varied services such as those offered by the family dentist, and a dentist that work with children – services by an orthodontist, periodontist, an endodontist and any other dental care practitioner such as the oral hygienist. These specialists may all offer a service that addresses specific issues, but all of them trained as dentists before they started to specialize, so being part of the same practice or service makes sense for them – and the patients benefit too as they have access to the best dental care, at the same practice, for example. Dental care should never be considered unimportant. It is essential for everyone, and not only because it means our teeth are looked after properly. In certain cases dental problems can indeed lead to other health issues. Make sure you know a good dentist in your area, and get the kids used to the fact that it is essential to be checked regularly for any signs of dental issues.
