Ven Pongal/ Khara Pongal – Social kitchen Description Ven Pongal/ Khara Pongal is a South Indian cuisine, which is really famous for its great taste and simplicity. Its usually offered as an naivedyam foods. This recipe is really quick to make. The main ingredient is whole black pepper, which is added. If you donot like the taste of biting into it, then you can even crush the black pepper and add. Khara Pongal It tastes great with the whole ones though and I prefer the whole black pepper one. It is one of the best comfort food, which is so light on stomach and yet so tasty. Traditionally, the rice which is used for pongal is seeraga samba rice, if you donot have access to this, you can also use Sona masoori rice or Govindo bhog rice.Ven Pongal Ingredients 1 cup: Rice 1 cup: Yellow Moong dal 2.5 tsp: Ginger paste 10: Curry leaves 15-16: Cashew broken 2 tsp: Cumin Seeds/ Jeera
2 tsp: Whole Black pepper 3-4 tbsp: Ghee As per taste: Salt 4 cups: Water 3 tbsp: Grated coconut Directions 1.Rinse the rice in running cold water for several times and let it soak for 10 minutes in water. 2.Mean while, lightly roast the moong dal, which enhances the flavor. Do not brown them. 3.After lightly roasting them, wash both the rice and and dal together again. 4.Now, pressure cook the dal, rice and water together, along with some salt , 1 tsp ghee and cumin seeds(crush the cumin seeds). 5.Pressure cook for 4 whistles. Till both the dal and rice are easily smashable. 6.Let the pressure settle down. 7.take a pan, add some ghee. 8.Add the broken cashews, cumin seeds and ginger paste. Fry the ginger paste. 9.Also, add the black peppercorns and curry leaves. 10.Now add, the grated coconut. 11.Fry for a minute. 12.Put the tempering into the dal and rice mixture. 13.Check the salt. 14.The delectable ven pongal is ready to be served.
