MOBILE6 • MOBILE6 estimates emission factors (g/mile) of air pollutants for the North American road vehicle fleet • The modelling is based on thousands of FTP and IM240 tests and correlations among the results • The model attempts to account for the differences between the FTP and actual fleet activity by applying corrections for differences in average speed, temperature, etc. • Some derivatives of the MOBILE model for other fleets: • MOBILE6-Mexico, MOBILE5c, MOBILE6C (Canada) • Application to vehicle fleets that differ from the North American fleet requires significant testing/modelling work. Not meaningful to apply MOBILE to other countries without this effort.
MOBILE6 Emission factors, g/mile • Pollutants: • Criteria Air Contaminants, Air Toxics, GHGs • Vehicle classes • 28 classes from passenger cars to heavy trucks • Type of roadway • Freeway, ramp, artery, local • Years • Past and future (1952-2050)
MOBILE6 Inputs • The modelling is based on information about: • Vehicle fleet characteristics • Fleet activity characteristics • Fuel characteristics • Meteorological parameters
MOBILE6 Inputs • Vehicle fleet characteristics • Registration (age) distribution by vehicle class • Annual mileage accumulation by vehicle class • Diesel sales fractions by vehicle class and model year • Natural gas vehicle fractions • Inspection and maintenance (I/M) program description • Anti-tampering inspection program description
MOBILE6 Inputs • Fleet activity characteristics • Average speed distribution by hour and roadway • Distribution of vehicle miles traveled by roadway type • Engine starts per day by vehicle class and distribution by hour • Engine start soak time distribution by hour • Trip end distribution by hour • Average trip length distribution • Hot soak duration • Distribution of vehicle miles traveled by vehicle class
MOBILE6 Inputs • Fuel characteristics • Reid vapor pressure • sulfur content • oxygenate content
MOBILE6 Inputs • Ambient/meteorological parameters • Month (January, July) • Hourly Temperature • Humidity and solar load • Altitude (high, low)
Vehicle weights • GVWR is the maximum design loaded weight. • VCW vehicle curb weight or net weight • LVW loaded vehicle weight : VCW+136kg • ALVW average loaded vehicle weight, is the numerical average of the GVWR and the curb weight. (VCW+GVWR)/2
MOBILE6 – Using the program • Prepare input file (Text file, ASCII) consisting of MOBILE6 COMMANDS in specified format • C:\> MOBILE6.EXE case.IN • Look at output in specified text files case.TXT for descriptive output files for HC, CO, and NOx. case.PM for descriptive output files for PM and related pollutants. case.TOX for descriptive output files for air toxic pollutants. case.TAB for spreadsheet output files. case.TB1 for database output files. case.ERR for fatal error reports.
MOBILE6 Input File Structure • MOBILE6 Commands are placed in Header, Run, Scenario sections • One Header section per input file • Multiple Runs per input file • Multiple scenarios per Run • Header Section • First Run Data Section • First Scenario Data Section • Second Scenario Data Section • . • . • Last Scenario Data Section • Second Run Data Section • First Scenario Data Section • Second Scenario Data Section • . • . • Last Scenario Data Section • Last Run Data Section • First Scenario Data Section • Second Scenario Data Section • . • . • Last Scenario Data Section
MOBILE6 Commands • Specify model parameter inputs • Specify model options (data processing, input/output) • Take the form:
