Working with Data InData Visualization with Tableau Online Tutorialwe will discuss the “working of data”. We have the following topics to understand the working of data. • Filters • Sorts • Groups • Hierarchies • Sets
Tableau Filters • Filters are easily created by dragging a measure or dimension to the Filters card. • Can be created directly on the shelf by right clicking the pill and choosing to filter. • Once a filter is created on the shelf, you can also see that the filter is shown on the filters card. • Filters look very different depending on the type of data being filtered. • Text Data • Numeric data • Dates
Filtering Text • Text Data: • Drag a text field from Dimensions to the filters card.
Filtering Numeric • Drag a Measure to filters card. • Notice that first you must identify what to filter on:
Filtering Numeric • Next you decide how you want the number to filter: • You can filter by a range, between two values (ex, more than 0 and less than 1000) • You can choose a value to be at least some value (no less than 0 for example) • You can choose that a value be no more than some value, (ex: all sales less than $1000.00) • You can decide how to handle special values. • Choose to filter on • All Values • Only Null values • Only Non Null Values
Quick Filters • A Quick filter is a simple selection list available to the end user to filter. • Quick filters can easily be created from any value. • Usually quick filters are best used with dimension values. • To create a quick filter, choose any pill in your view, right click and choose ‘ Show Quick Filter’ • The quick filter will appear on the screen and its usefulness can be changed by hovering over the quick filter and clicking on the down arrow in the upper right hand corner.
Quick Filters properties • Edit Filter • brings you back to the same filter screen you get when you drag the value to the Filters card. Here you can also limit the value by wildcard, condition, or TopN. • Clear Filter • Completely removes the quick filter and any associated filter from the view. • Apply to worksheets • Here you can set the filter on one sheet to filter every other sheet using the same data source, or you can choose which sheets to filter. Default is set to ‘Only this worksheet’ • ***Only works on same datasource! • Customize • Various options, important are the search button and the ability to add or remove the (All) option for the filter. Default checks all.
Quick Filters properties • You can Show Title and even Edit Title. • Only Relevant values allows for dynamic cascading. • All values in database does not allow for dynamic cascading. • Choose how to show the filter.
You Try It! • Lets Take 15 minutes to try and complete the Filter. • If you face any difficulty please post your question here under Tableau Tag: TechandMate Knowledgebase • We’ll love to answer your queries! Till then… • READ MORE ON DATA VISUALIZATION WITH TABLEAU ONLINE TUTORIAL
