  1. D i ff e r e n t H u n t e r s F o r D i ff e r e n t D i s c i p l i n e s Hunters, much like other sports people have their own preference when it comes to what they enjoy hunting. For some shooters it never goes beyond the shooting range but for millions world-wide the thrill is in the hunt; therefore they decide which disciple suits them and their preference best. Some are avid deer hunters and plan every holiday period around their favorite activity right from looking at the best states for hunting to the best lodges in the region that they choose. Others love turkey hunting and will do some research before they settle on the region or lodge that they prefer above others. For many millions all over the world nothing beats wing-shooting, that activity that refers to shooting at birds in flight. There are also choices as to what bird(s) one prefers in this regard. Some find the ideal spot for dove shooting, or for quail hunting – or pheasant, or whatever one’s first choice would be. To find the ideal destination is not always a given, even if you know you’ll be visiting the South, for example. Many factors combine to ensure the wing-shooter is given the best options and opportunities for a great time. It starts with the region where the best choices are found, then one needs to look at the destination – ultimately a great hunting lodge known for the opportunities for the wing-shooter. Of course there will always be choices but most would probably agree that, since most have only limited weeks of leave every year, it is important to choose well right from the start. Even the hunter that has more time will not be impressed with a lodge that offers sub-standard services – and not enough, or poor quality, birds. You want to know you visit a lodge or region where chances are that you will be able to leave with great prey – even though most good lodges will place a limit on what you may shoot and how many of a certain type of bird. Of course this is done according to the principles of sound conservation as no good lodge will allow senseless shooting and culling lest soon their herds and flocks are depleted. Therefore the best lodges will employ knowledgeable, experienced personnel such as biologists to manage their animal populations by making sure they offer them good forage and water in ideal circumstances: that way the lodge owner is assured of good quality – and abundant – deer and bird life, with the result that the hunter is offered a superior

  2. experience. The good lodge understands the important issues and will always make sure that they have a great balance: great, ideal habitat vs. good quality birds and other animals. They will make sure birds have access to great berries, seeds and other foods that they thrive on; likewise deer will do well in the right circumstances and topography and with access to food plots. The lodge that makes sure they run their business along these lines stands a great chance at offering great birds and deer for their visitors, with the result that these visitors will be likely to enjoy their stay, speak highly of the lodge and refer others to them. Balance is key, always. That means lodges will have to control numbers which they offer for the hunt so that the next generation of deer and birds are not at a disadvantage in terms of numbers. Control is important. The well-established lodge will ensure that they never cull senselessly for quick money; instead they will exercise control and ask their visitors to do the same in terms of numbers of deer and birds to be shot. That will ensure that hunters are given great opportunities to hunt healthy animals, and deer and birds are given the opportunity to thrive – for everybody’s benefit, i.e. the hunter and the lodge owner, as well as the greater industry at large.
