If you have never played or just starting out this article can help you so that you can impress your mates and have some fun at the tables. Things you will need:
1. Online: A stable internet connection and a device (computer/mobile) to play, a mode of payment to deposit money if you wish to play with real money but since you are new we recommend practicing with play money ?rst. A lot of sites o?er welcome bonuses but we still would suggest practicing with play money ?rst so as to get accustomed to the interface. Make sure you have some form of ID proof as most sites require them if you wish to withdraw your winnings. 2. Home games: A deck of cards and a few extra as backups, a poker chipset, a smooth surface table, and comfortable chairs. Even if you don’t have a chipset you can use direct cash to play. 3. Live casino: You will need to carry a valid ID and some cash or card. We recommend not to carry more than what you have already planned to spend as the environment in a casino can be overwhelming for new players There are various forms of poker like No-limit Hold Them (NLHE) Pot Limit Omaha (PLO) Stud etc. but here we will teach you the most famous version which is NLHE. We would assume that the table is full with 9 players however it can also be played with fewer people. The gameplay can be divided into two formats, the ?rst aspect is the betting part and the second aspect is the winning/losing part based on hand strength. Betting: The action will always move in a clockwise direction around the table. The stakes or blinds are decided before the game begins. There is a predetermined minimum buyin and a maximum buyin, this can be changed with the consent of all the players however in the middle of a hand a person cannot add more chips but once a round is completed he can add more chips. We would assume that the blinds will be 1 / 2. There are three important terms that you should know with respect to your position in table Small Blind, Big Blind, and Dealer. Small Blind is where the action will begin from, the ?rst card will be dealt with the person in this position and he will always be the ?rst person to bet after the ?rst round. Big Blind is the position to the left of the small blind and will be the second person to act after small blind. Dealer is the last position where the entire round ends other than the ?rst round where the Big Blind will be last to act. Other positions can be looked at in this image. First game: A dealer is assigned by any way comfortable to the players. The small blind i.e the person to the left of the dealer will post 1 chip and big blind i.e the person left of small blind will post 2 chips. These blinds will be posted every round before the cards are dealt. After this, the dealer will go on distributing a card to each player in a clockwise manner starting from the small blind and last to himself and then repeat so as every player will have two cards. He then will burn one card (remove a card without
disclosing it and keeping it separate from the deck) and place three cards face down in the middle of the table. He will then burn one card and place a card face down and repeat the last action once again so there will be ?ve-card face down at the middle of the table. Streets in poker: Flop, turn and river The ?rst three cards that the dealer put face down are together known as the ?op, the fourth card is called the turn and the ?fth is called the river. Betting rounds in poker happen in terms of streets or rounds. The ?rst street is often called pre?op where betting occurs before seeing any cards, the next street is called the ?op, followed by turn and river. The action is taken streetwise in the following manner. Pre?op: person left to big blind will take the ?rst action and big blind will take the last action. Flop: small blind will take the ?rst action if in the hand otherwise, the ?rst person to the left of the small blind (going clockwise) will take the action. The dealer or the button will be last to act if in the hand otherwise the person last to act from the right of dealer (going anticlockwise) will take the action. Turn: same as ?op River: same as ?op After the cards are dealt the person sitting left to the small blind will take an action. There are six actions in poker that you can take when your turn comes. a) Check : When you are ?rst to act in a hand and if you opt for checking then you will not have to put any chips, if your opponents also check after you then the game will move on to next street i.e another card will be turned upside, in case checks happen like this after last street then both opponents will go to showdown and the best player will win the pot. b) Bet: You say bet when you are the ?rst person who wants to put in chips at the beginning of every street. You do this action to win more chips as the hand progresses or to scare the opponent into folding also known as a blu?. c) Call: when you face a raise from any player and you just want to match his raise then you can choose to call. A call is always made after a person has made a raise. If you are last to act then your call will move the game to the next street and if you are the last to call at last street then the game will go to showdown. d) Fold: if a person before you has raised then you can say that you fold then your cards will be mucked. You will lose the chips that you have out in the pot so far. e) Raise: after a person has made a bet or checked you can raise to put in even more chips in the pot. You can raise however a minimum of double the amount of the last bet. f) All in: You take this action when you want to put all your chips in the pot. If between two or more all-in players the winner will get back chips in a ratio of the amount he put in. The example you go all-in with 100 chips and your opponent has only 70 chips but he calls. Unfortunately, you lose but he will only get 140 chips i.e 70 of his back plus 70 from you since he only put in 70. Another example would be if you go all-in with 100
chips and two players both with 500 chips also all in. The hand plays such that you win and the second player’s hand is better than third player’s then you would get 3 times of what you put in which was 100 so 300. The second player will get the remaining amount from the pot which comes out to 1000 (pot was 1300). Hand Strength: To win a hand in poker one has to make the best combination from the cards given in comparison to the other players. It is vital that you understand that you may not have the best possible hand also called the nuts but still win if your hand is better than your opponents. Another important concept to understand in the beginning is how to choose your cards. Everyone is dealt with two cards whilst ?ve cards are dealt in the middle. These ?ve are called community cards and can be assumed as your own, along with two dealt with you the total becomes seven cards out of which you have to choose the best ?ve. In case there is a draw then the chips in the pot will get evenly divided. A higher ranked hand will beat a lower one and the winner will take whatever is in the pot, for example, a ?ush will beat a straight. This chart should help you visualize the ranking. In certain areas where both opponents have the same pair then they will compare their second card in case it is bigger than the ones in community cards. That is all the information you will need to get started. Go out and start playing as experience is the best form of learning and have fun along the way too. 19 Views 0 Comments Add a Comment.....
