10 Meritorious Deeds of Buddhism. Merit and good Karma are essential the same thing – a beneficial and protective force which can extend over a long period of time. You create merit or good Karma by doing good deeds either through physical action, words or thought. Making or creating merit is critical to the practice of Buddhism. Whether you live a good and fortunate life or a bad and unfortunate life depends upon your individual merits and demerits. Performing good actions gives rise to merit which will help purify your mind by reducing your greed, hatred and delusion. A more pure mind helps bring us happiness in the present as well as in the future. Buddha taught that we should perform the following ten meritorious deeds in order to live a happy and peaceful life. These deeds will help us develop knowledge and understanding. Additionally, these meritorious deeds will benefit not only ourselves but others too. 1. Generosity: This means giving true charity, which means to give something without expecting a material benefit in return. Generosity helps to improve other people’s live and can also inspire them. 2. Morality: When you have good moral conduct, this benefits all beings with whom you come into contact with. 3. Mental Culture: As with morality, mental culture helps to bring peace to others and can inspire them to practice Buddhism. 4. Reverence or Respect: This helps to create harmony in society. 5. Service in Helping Others. As with generosity, service without helping anything in return helps improve the lives of others. 6. Transference of Merits to Others: Sharing merits with others helps to show that Buddhism and Atheism/God you are concerned and care about other people’s welfare.
7. Rejoicing in the Merits of Others: This helps to encourage others to perform more merits. 8. Preaching and Teaching the Dharma: This helps bring happiness for both the teacher and listener. 9. Listening to the Dharma: As with teaching, this helps you live based on Buddha’s teachings which helps bring you inner peace and happiness. 10. Straightening One’s Views: This enables you to show others the beautify of Buddha’s teachings.
