  1. Open-ended Responses in Math 4 step protocol H. S. C. E.

  2. Highlighting • Hold the pencil in your hand as you read the question • Underline the key words in the question • Circle the numbers • Number the parts of the problem • Put a ~ under the question

  3. Solve • Write the word “Solve” at the top of your workspace • Create the number sentence, make a chart, draw a picture, etc. • Show ALL of your working out • Solve the problem • Be neat!

  4. Circle • Circle the solution • Look back to underlined question • Check you have answered all parts of the question

  5. Explain • Step by step in sentence form: Explain how you solved the problem be very, very specific Use words and numbers in your answer use words: first, second, third, nextand last • Restate the answer

  6. Open Ended Response Review Problem of the week or month • Teach and have students apply the H-S-C-E protocol • Assign the problem to all students within the grade • Each teacher brings the best answers- 3’s on state scoring rubric to grade level/meetings • Discuss merits of each answer- identify a norm for each open ended response that the grade level agree upon • Choose the anchor paper (norm) for each problem to share with students • Repeat with a new open ended problem monthly.
