Where is Roopkund? How to reach there from Delhi? Roopkund known as ‘The Mysterious Lake’ or ‘The skeleton Lake’ is a high altitude glacial lake and a picturesque tourist destination in the Uttarakhand state of India. Lying in the lap of Trishul peak famous for the hundreds of human skeletons found at the edge of the lake. The lake is located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 5,029 meters (16,499 feet). Roopkund is surrounded by rock-strewn glaciers and snow-clad mountains. A shallow lake, having a depth of about two meters, Roopkund has attracted attention because of the human skeletal remains that are visible at its bottom when the snow melts. Researchers have concluded that the skeletons are the remains of people killed in a sudden, violent hailstorm in the 9th century. Because of the human remains, the lake has been called Skeleton Lake in recent times. The lake is a popular trekking destination.
Roopkund Trek Location Roopkund is and one of the important places for trekking in Chamoli District, Himalayas, near the base of two Himalayan peaks: Trisul (7,120 m) and Nanda Ghunti (6,310 m). The Lake is flanked by a rock face named Junargali to the North and a peak named Chandania Kot to the East. A religious festival is held at the alpine meadow of Bedni Bugyal every autumn with nearby villages participating. How to Reach Roopkund: Roopkund lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand near the base of two Himalayan peaks – Trisul and Nanda Ghunti. Roopkund is not connected to a motorable road all the way. It requires a trek of about 23 km to reach Roopkund Lake after the last motorable point, wan village.
Roopkund Trek From Delhi This starting point of the Roopkund trek lies at a distance of 57 km from the popular Karnaprayag in Uttarakhand. Being in a remote area, it requires a lot of effort to reach here, unless travelling on a hired vehicle or a private car. From Delhi, a combination of train, buses and shared jeeps are required to reach at Wan Village after the journey of at least 24 hours. Distance wise, it is about 530 km from Delhi via Haldwani, Almora and about 505 km from Delhi via Rishikesh, Karnaprayag. Delhi to Haldwani/Kathgodham: A train is the best mode of transport for this journey. There are mainly three trains (Shatabdi Express, Uttar SamparkKranti Express and Ranikhet Express) available between Delhi and Haldwani.
I always recommend Ranikhet Express as it starts from Delhi in the night at 10:30 PM and reaches Haldwani in the morning at 04:30 AM. Reaching Haldwani in the early morning is a good idea for onward journey. Kathgodham is the last rail-head on this section and 10 km away from Haldwani. It is better to leave the train at Haldwani, rather than Kathgodham, because Haldwani is a bigger city and transports for the onward journey can be arranged here in a better manner. Buses, Trains and private vehicles are available from Delhi to Kathgodham.
