Mission Statement The Florida Water Department needs your help! They have been told some manatees will be moving into the area but nobody knows what they look like so they can’t identify them! Help the water department by learning more about manatees and help them identify one!
First of all… What are we looking for?
We are looking for a Florida Manatee. Do you know which of these animals is a Florida Manatee?
Let’s get the facts straight! Get out your inspector’s notebooks and write down a few characteristics of manatees so we know when we find one!
The first thing you need to know is what manatees look like. They are big animals with gray skin. A manatee’s skin is about this color
Manatees live in the water but don’t look like dolphins or other fish found in the water. Most of the time you will find them hanging out in canals or shallow areas.
Manatees have two flippers, kind of like arms and big round tail.
Manatees don’t have fur but they do have a little bit of hair covering their bodies, it is very hard to see though.
Walrus Sea Lion Be careful! Lots of people get manatees mixed up with sea lions and walruses because they look very similar.
TIME OUT! What information about manatees have you recorded so far in your inspector’s notebook?
Now that we know what manatees look like… Where can we find them?
When looking for manatees, be sure to bring your thermometer! You won’t find a manatee in water below 68ºF.
Manatees really like canals and swimming in warm shallow water.
TIME OUT! What information did you record in your inspector’s notebook about where manatees live?
Now that we know what manatees are and where they live… What kind of food do manatees need in order to survive?
Look for manatees in places with lots of plants! They only eat plants and vegetables. How would you like that diet?!
Wherever a manatee chooses to live, there better be LOTS of food; manatees eat between 100 and 150 pounds of plants and vegetables everyday! That’s a lot of food!
TIME OUT! Compare what you have in your inspector’s notebook with a neighbor.
Wait a minute, if manatees live under water… How will I ever see one from land?
Keep your eyes out for manatee noses! To breathe, manatees stick their noses out of the water, take in some air and then go back under water.
An active manatee might come up every 30 seconds for air so make sure you keep a close look out!
Now that we know what we are looking for and where we need to look, let’s go on a manatee search! Before we go, let’s take one last look at the notes we’ve taken our inspector’s notebooks.
The search is on! Can you find the manatee?
Fun Facts about Manatees
A resting manatee can hold its breath for up to 20 minutes! How long can you hold your breath?
The biggest manatee on record was over 13 feet long and weighed over 3,500 pounds! Check it out! This is how a manatee is weighed.
The majority of a manatee’s day is spent resting and eating. What a life! Z…Z…Z…Z…Z…
While they are sleeping manatees probably come up to breathe without actually waking up, kind of like sleep walking!
Let’s test your memory! Without using your inspector’s notebook, see if you could find and identify a Florida manatee. Put your thinking caps on!
