  2. FANS as a building block • United Airlines pleased with FANS experience • Would like to see worldwide expansion • FANS-1 a first step in long journey to airspace improvement!

FANS-1 Value to United • Core knowledge of what technologies and procedures work – key in moving forward! • Experience, acceptance, and even reliance for our flight crews and dispatchers • Change to the traditional ATC “paradigm” • No significant $ savings yet, but increasing opportunities for savings

FANS Expansion • Long standing CPDLC/ADS operations: • Pacific • Australia, NZ, Tahiti, Japan • New operational entrants: • North Atlantic • Canadian Northern, Iceland, China, India, Iran • Coming soon.. • Gander CPDLC, Shanwick?, NYC,… • South America (at least in RNAV implementation • Airline benefits – Requests and Clnc faster!

FANS Lessons learned • Major cultural shift from HF/Reporting/ATC • Extended training required! • Human Factors far more important than envisioned • Implementation coordination essential! • Success so far? – our crews initially rejected, now cannot live without! • Leadership from Boeing/Brad Cornell; Europe/Rob Mead for ATN

  6. FANS Lessons learned/2 • Single standard for all CNS/ATM in both flight decks and workstations • Ex: more than 16 standards for LAT/LONG • Call Signs • Different protocols now required for various cockpit applications

  7. FANS Lessons learned/3 • Installation schedules must be better managed. • Must be prepared for contingencies • Industry bias must support new vs. old • Remember the paying customer.. • Other mechanisms must be used to encourage expansion

Single Standard examples: • Actual messages for same directive: • CROSS 100S AT AND MAINTAIN FL350, REPORT REACHING 350 • VERIFY YOULL BE CROSSING 01 SOUTH AT 350 FOR TRAFFIC • Other example from Center: • CTAM 350 • Meaning “Climb To And Maintain FL 350” • Our crews are not trained in this acronym!

  9. Multiple protocol examples: • Flight ID’s • UA123 • UAL123 • UA0123 • UA 123 • UAL 0123 • Current ADS trials in Atlantic • Crews signing on as ADS but still making HF voice reports!

Looking Forward: • Seamless Worldwide operations • Global Harmonization • Standard Procedures • Improved Human Factors • We must change the “old way is good enough” way of doing business • Reduce pilot/controller workload • Reduce voice channel congestion • Enhance Pilot/Control sector coordination

  11. Looking Forward/2: • No change for change’s sake • During transition from FANS-1 to CNS/ATM-1 • Seamless Airspace transition • United equipping for ATN (new delivery) • Current participation in PETAL II • Potential participation in CPDLC 1/A

  12. Looking Forward/3: • More compelling business cases for retrofits • VDL/2 – AOA • VDL/2 – ATN • CPDLC on VDL/2 ATN • VDL/3? • UAL looking forward to working with development of CNS-ATM and Free Flight

  13. FANS in CPDLC Build 1/A: • Significant amount of FANS Aircraft: • All US DOD Aircraft • UAL – All B747-400’s, All 777’s • A330’s, A340’s • ATN Aircraft equipage: • 24 AA Domestic B737 Aircraft • 4 AA International 767’s • 2 other European Aircraft

FANS in CPDLC Build 1/A, cont.: • Dual Stack issue • Needs gateway -> DLAP ->FANS • Not seen as being ATN compliant • Less cost for installation, easier cost-benefit analysis • PETAL II – demonstrated feasibility • Latency – VDL/2 tests • NATCA concerns • ATN flight deck interface • B-777, B747-400, A320-DCDU

  15. Concept of Future ATSP: • Controller will have full “electronic visibility” of airspace • Airspace managed by Minimum Required Performance for CNS. All aircraft required to be at this level • All Aircraft will be free to maneuver as long as intentions are communicated • Controller’s workstation includes conflict probe capability • In emergency, A/C position to be determined within min. RNP standards

Why FANS and ATN? • Cooperation in the use of the world’s airspace is essential to meeting future growth needs of the public travel sector • Safe, efficient transportation getting harder to deliver in gridlock due to max'd-out older systems and policies • UAL encourages all in industry to join those of us in expanding FANS and beyond to create the next generation of Air Traffic Systems
