  2. Enjoying Food • Appetite • **psychological desire to eat • Stimulated by sight and aroma • Sound can also affect appetite • Good appetite = sign of wellness

  3. Hunger • **is the physical need to eat • **fatigue • **light headedness • Sensation of hunger goes away after 20 minutes

  4. Taste Smell Sight Sound Touch What foods appeal to these senses?

  5. Food and Your Emotions • Food satisfies more than physical needs • **Eat from stress • **Eat to express positive emotions

  6. Food Flavor • Flavor • **combines a food’s taste, smell and touch • **papillae—tiny bumps that contain taste buds

  7. Children have a keener sense of taste than adults • **smokers have impaired tastes • **senses are altered = food flavor is altered • Illness/medications can dull sensations and detract from flavor of foods
