Functional family
Neurotic, enmeshed family
Disintegrated family
Absent family
4. Functional Family System Dependent drinks due to problems outside of family
Relationships are good
Family is relatively stable
Intervention
Exploration of implicit rules/roles
Family expectations of behavior
5. The Neurotic Enmeshed Family Drinking has disrupted family functioning
Ineffective communication
Family feels guilty/responsible for drinking
Partners fight for control of family/self
Likely to see abuse/neglect
Intervention
Therapy/education
Involvement with others outside of family
6. Disintegrated Family More enmeshed
Dependent is more likely to be out of home
Intervention
Usually begins with dependent
Explores relationships with family
When dependent is stable, reunification is considered
Relationships need to be redefined
7. Absent Family Drinking creates complete separation from family
Most relationships are drinking centered
Reunification/reconciliation not likely
Intervention
Work to establish new social systems (church, support groups, etc.)
Not all will be able to do this
8. Therapeutic Models Disease Model
Family members develop characteristics similar to dependent
Family is seen as developing specific roles and communication problems
Family often treated separately
Referred to Al-Anon, ACOA groups
Little research to see if works
9. Therapeutic Models Behavioral Model
Drinking continues because its reinforced
Focus is on how family responses trigger behavior
Goal is to find ways to replace reinforcement for drinking with reinforcements for sobriety
Research indicates best results with alcoholic couples
10. Therapeutic Models Family Systems Model
Focuses on organization of family and maintaining homeostasis
Believes that family roles/rules are organized around alcohol use
Focus is on family as a unit
Therapy looks as redefining roles, identifying alliances, changing communication
Looks at generational affect of dependence
