SAY NO TO GALLBLADDER SURGERY B Y D R . V R S U D H A K A R B H M S , M D . ( A C U )
As we talk about this I remembered an elderly patient of mine, probably aged around 75 when we met. She has been experiencing severe but irregular pain, just above the liver due to the formation of cysts that too in both liver and bile ducts. Interestingly due to those stones she had her gallbladder removed when she was around 40 years of age .But later unable to bare those symptoms that barely came down and the frequently returning pain after the surgery she had visited me. That too post gallbladder surgery her liver cysts continued developing and even the stones in the bile duct reappeared. You may have heard about how any blockages in Bile duct can put added pressure on the ducts thereby leading to swollen tubes and ultimately leading to increased sized liver cysts. The exact thing occurred in her too and she ended up gaining excess weight as her gallbladder was already removed.
I did feel this is going to be a kind of a tough nut to crack the whole case, since the surgeons were helpless in her case to do anything more than this. I began by examining her medical history just like most of us do and to my surprise dehydration had played a major role in this whole thing including her having red liver palms. A yellowish dry complexion visible in the eyes and skin and white layer on the tongue clearly evident. Majorly cooked food, hardly any fruits and raw food and vegetables that took over cooked –losing in on all the nutrients by the time she consumed them. Vitamin C deficiency too appeared due to lack of fruits in her diet. This is what I found post examination. Upon discussion she revealed why this carefree approach that too when her Gallbladder is removed. She mentioned it was because her surgeon had assured she can now on have any food since there is no more question of Gallbladder!! Very incorrect statement!! In fact she was a classic example to quote to people to convey the need to take good care of their liver and bile ducts especially when their gallbladder is removed.
Purely because she was not guided in the right direction for the proper care after surgery, it ended up into years of painful suffering. The good news is now she is totally aware and knows her care options and that means the bile ducts will receive the best care they should have all these years and move away from suffering.
