Data & Statistics Math Vocabulary
Pictograph • Data – another word for information. • Pictograph – a graph that uses pictures or symbols to show data. • Key – tells the quantity (how much) the picture (symbol) is worth or represents.
Line Plot • A line plot displays data along a number line. • Outlier – a number in a set of data that is VERY different from the rest of the numbers.
Bar Graph • A bar graph uses bars to show data. • Scale – numbers that show the units used on a graph. • Interval – the pattern of the numbers used on a graph.
Ordered Pairs • Ordered pair – a pair of numbers that that names a point on a coordinate grid. (8,4) • In the ordered pair (8,4) the 8 tells you to go OVER 8 spots on the horizontal (x) axis. • The 4 tells you to go UP 4 spots on the vertical (y) axis. • Remember – OVER and UP!
Line Graphs • Line graphs – connects points to show how data (information) changes over time. • Trend – the increase or decrease in the data. • *Read a line graph from left to right. If the line goes up, you have an increase. If the line goes down, you have a decrease.
Basic Statistics • Median – the middle number in a set of data after the data has been arranged from least to greatest. Example – 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 – 6 is the median! • Mode – the number or numbers that occur most often in the data. Example 5, 6, 6, 7– 6 is the mode! Remember MO – Most Often • Range – the difference (SUBTRACT) between the greatest and least number in the data. Example – 33, 55, 66, 88, 99. Subtract: 99-33 = 66. The range is 66!
