We’ve Come a Long Way 2013 @EdDataCampaign #DFA2013
We’ve Come a Long Way • In 2005, only 12 states had the ability to match K-12 and postsecondary records, now 42 states provide publically available high school feedback reports. • In 2005, only 36 states collected student-level graduation and drop-out data, now they all do. • In 2005, only 14 states could match teachers with students, now all states have growth measures and 17 states share information about how teachers perform with educator preparation programs. @EdDataCampaign #DFA2013
Remaining Challenges • Only 19 states have securely linked K–12 and workforce data. • 9 states provide timely, role-based access to student data for parents, teachers, and other appropriate stakeholders. • 12 states implement policies and practices, such as professional development and licensing, to ensure that educators know how to use data appropriately. @EdDataCampaign #DFA2013
Everyone can do more to protect privacy and build trust States & Districts: • Communicate the value of data and how they are protected. • Update privacy, security, and confidentiality practices and policies to adapt to changing landscape. • Establish data governance that guide the implementation and enforcement of policies and practices. • Build capacity of all end users to protect data. Service providers: • Bolster technical/legal expertise and oversight capacity. • Ensure that privacy measures are implemented consistently and effectively across the state. • Support districts in management and security burdens. • Update security and privacy protocols and practices. Families: • Demand access to data necessary to be engaged partners in your child’s education. • Expect clarity on what data are collected and for what purposes. • . @EdDataCampaign #eddata
