4. Example for Behavior Alignment • An example in daily life. In china, people normally just use toothpaste to brush their teeth. While in US, in addition to toothpaste, they also use mouse rinse like Listerine. Many Chinese student now adapt to use mouth rinse also. • Before I came to U.S, in my spare time, I always play board game. People here likes to go to bar, party. So I started go to party with friends. • A light smoker will have a tendency to smoke more when sitting at the same table with a heavy smoker.

7. Pros and Cons • Pros: Make people aware the fact that he or she intend to pay more(less) when eat with others. • Cons: It may not change the people’s behavior at all. What’s more, if others are also aware of that fact, sometimes it’s embarrassing.

9. Example for Appearance Alignment • Fashion alignment. Different countries have different fashion style and when people move to another country, they would change their fashion style. • In a class presentation, when some groups of people decided to wear business professional, many others would do the same.

Example for Language Alignment • People use the same word choice, tone, interruption when talking in discussion • When an international student is among a group of local students, he/she tends to use the language more carefully, with more clear accent and intonation • The new comers' comments on university BBS will become similar to the long-time users'. An example in my case is that when I first log on to bbs.sjtu.edu.cn, I always comment "agree" if I agree with someone else. But later, as I become long-time user, I will just leave comments like "re" or 1024, even though I may not know why people are commenting this way. • In china, we usually call teachers with their last name, while in US, Chinese students gradually begin to call teachers with their first name. • In western world, when people cough, they would say "excuse me", and others will say "god bless you". Many Chinese students learned to behave like this way.
