  2. Origin • The Spanish Water Dog is a breed of dog developed by the shepherds in Spain as a multi-purpose herder who was also used sometimes as a gundog, as well as an assistant to fishermen. Other Names: Perro de Agua Español Turco de Andaluz AndalusianTurk

  3. Breed History 1100 A.D. First documented in Spain 1985 Recognized by Spanish Kennel Club 1999 Federation Cynologique Internationale (F.C.I.) 2004 United Kennel Club – fully recognized 2005 American Kennel Club Foundation Stock Service 2008 AKC approved competition in herding, agility, obedience, and tracking SWD VIDEO

Breed Standard • Classification: • FCI: Group 8: Retrievers Section 3: Water Dogs. • AKC: Working Group • UKC: Gundog Group • Appearance:Rustic dog, well proportioned (medium weight), long, narrow head, attractive appearance, of an athletic nature with well developed muscles. Docked tail in US only. • Males should be approximately 17 to 19 in. tall at the withers, and between 39 to 48 lbs. in weight. • Females should be approximately 15 to 18 in. tall at the withers, and between 30 to 39 lbs in weight.

Breed Standard cont. • Coat: curly non-shedding coat that may naturally form cords.  Low dander hypo-allergenic dog. • Grooming:Minimal grooming, never brush, separate matted cords, eyes and ears cleaned as needed. • Temperament: High energy, strong herding and protective instincts, loyal family dog, sensitive to sudden sounds and movement, moody, and strong willed. Extremely intelligent.

  6. Health Issues • The breed's life expectancy is about 14 years. • Hip dysplasia • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (prcd-PRA) • Hypothyroidism • Addison's Disease – natural steroid deficiency • Endocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency • Allergies • Cataracts
