TIME Collaborative: Across the Nation • Multi-year initiative to develop high-quality and sustainable expanded learning time schools in 5 states--CO, CT, MA, NY, TN • Launched in 2012 with nearly 40 schools from 11 districts participating in the planning process • Majority of these Cohort I schools moving towards implementation in fall 2013 • Currently launching planning process with Cohort II districts and schools for implementation in fall 2014 • Ford Foundation providing funds to build state, district, and school capacity to support the initiative • NCTL providing planning and implementation support at no cost to districts and schools District + School Selection June-July ‘13 School Planning Process Nov‘13 – Feb ‘14 Implementation Plans Due March ‘14 Implementation Begins August ‘14
TIME Collaborative: Colorado Colorado State Department of Education (CDE) and the Colorado Legacy Foundation are collaborating with NCTL and the Ford Foundation to bring the TIME Collaborative to a limited number of Colorado Districts • Cohort I: During the 2012-13 planning process, 3 Connecticut districts worked to re-engineer their school schedule to create a schedule with 1376 hours • Boulder Valley, Denver, Jeffco • Schools in all 3 districts are moving forward with implementation of expanded learning time in 2013-14 school year • Cohort II: 2 Colorado districts will engage in a planning process during the 2013-14 school year—Boulder Valley and Denver

TIME Collaborative: Sustainable ELT Successful expanded learning time schools maximize and target their RESOURCES to create their unique visions of their school-wide approaches and effective practices. Maximizing Resource • Identify proper amounts of time for courses/activities, for students AND teachers • Create staff schedules that are mindful your school’s budget AND adults’ work load; 300 more hours for students does not necessarily mean 300 more hours for teachers Time • Match students with the adults who can best serve their needs • Identify roles for adults that are tailored for his/her skill-set and experience • Explore policies that allow for flexibilities in staffing • Explore partner organizations/outside staff that can add to a school’s capacity TYPE OF RESOURCE People • Leverage existing technology to support and enhance a variety of classes, while concurrently decreasing teachers’ workloads and/or class sizes • Identify uses of technology to assist with non-direct instructional activities, such as data analysis Technology
TIME Collaborative: Support to Districts + Schools NCTL has developed tools and training modules to help schools plan and implement high-quality and sustainable expanded learning time models: • 6 full-day planning sessions and 2 additional meetings for school teams and key district personnel • Opportunities for to hear from practitioners from high-performing schools • Webinars • School Tours • Frequent onsite district and school coaching in-between sessions • On-line learning network with resources and opportunities for cross district and school sharing • Detailed resources for all program modules such as sample schedules, implementation guides and videos
TIME Collaborative: The Planning Sessions During SY13-14, school-based teams from the selected districts will participate in 6 full-day planning sessions and 2 additional meetings What are the Planning Sessions? • Opportunity to learn about best practices of high quality ELT schools • Time for small teams to meet and rethink their school schedules to better meets the needs of students and teachers • Opportunity for teams to network with other planning teams from across the state Who Participates? • A minimum of 5 teachers and the principal representing a broad range of disciplines, experience, and roles forms the Planning Team (this can be a sub-set of the ILT) • Include teachers, union representatives, principal, other administrative staff, parents, and school partners • Key district personnel charged with support schools’ efforts

School Planning Team TIME Collaborative: Collaboration at All Levels • Leads planning process • Keeps colleagues and stakeholders fully informed • District Time Collaborative Team • Your School’s Faculty and Staff • Led by District Point of Contact • Includes principals and district leaders • Meets monthly and as needed to address district solutions and problem solve • Participates in planning process as organized by Planning Team • Provides input and feedback on design as it is developed
TIME Collaborative: District Expectations Selected districts are expected to: • Manage and support the Initiative through close work with NCTL and participating schools • Assemble a cross-functional support team and designate a district “Point of Contact” • Apply for capacity-building grants • Attend all planning sessions and keep up to date with schools’ redesign efforts • Commit to high-quality ELT standards • Hold schools accountable to developing school redesign plans that reflect the 7 Essential Elements • Commit to sustainable redesign strategies • Strike a balance between setting parameters and encouraging creativity • Be aware of how school choices impact district policies, CBA, and operations and troubleshoot accordingly • Identify funding for implementation by leveraging existing state and district resources • Build support for ELT among key district stakeholders • Develop internal and external communication plans • Demonstrate alignment between this Initiative and district improvement efforts
