Primarily seeks to promote and accelerate economic growth, social progress, cultural development, regional peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region • Currently 11 members (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, Cambodia and Australia) ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)

  3. Encompasses 500m people, 45 million km2, a combined GDP of US$737 billion and a total trade of US$720 billion ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)

  4. Through its participation in the ASEAN regional forum, Australia has built up its image as a ‘good international citizen’ ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations)

Seeks to enhance economic growth and prosperity and to strengthen the Asia-Pacific region and community • Established in 1989 and has more than 21 members, Australia was a founding member • APEC represents more than 1/3 of the world’s population, approximately 60% of world’s GDP and 47% of world trade APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation)

  6. Has huge potential power, given that it represents the most economically dynamic region in the world, which generated nearly 70% of global economic growth in its first 10 years. APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation)
