Learning Objectives • At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: • Define a magnet • State that a magnet has two poles • State the properties of a magnet • Observe the magnetic field pattern • Around a magnet • Between two like poles arranged end to end • Between two unlike poles arranged end to end • State and describe some applications of magnets in their everyday life
Define a magnet • What is a magnet? • Have you ever seen a magnet before?
Define a magnet Observe!
Define a magnet • Do you know that a magnet has two poles? - North pole and South pole. • What is a pole? - The end of the magnet.
Define a magnet • A magnet is a solid which attracts magnetic materials or objects and points north-south direction when suspended. • A magnet is a material that produces a magnetic field. • A magnet is a piece of material that attracts metal.
DIFFERENT KINDS OF MAGNETS BAR MAGNET
Examples of magnets HORSESHOE MAGNETS
Examples of magnets RING MAGNETS A ROD MAGNET
PROPERTIES OF A MAGNET • A magnet exerts a magnetic force. • When a bar magnet is freely suspended, the bar magnet points to north-south direction.
PROPERTIES OF A MAGNET Watch this video…
PROPERTIES OF A MAGNET • Attractive property • A magnet attracts magnetic substances like iron, steel, nickel and cobalt. • Directive property • A freely suspended magnets always point to the north-south direction. • Poles exist in pairs • A magnet contains two poles i.e. North pole and South pole • Magnetic property is maximum at its poles.
LAWS OF MAGNETISM Pay attention… And listen what the man has to say…
LAWS OF MAGNETISM • Like poles repel each other. • Unlike poles attract each other.
MAGNETIC FIELDS Observe this video and take note of the lines of forces. Reminder: The lines of the magnetic field is called the lines of forces.
APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETS Activity • In groups of four or five, give a list of uses of magnets in your everyday life. • You are given 3 minutes for discussion. • Then choose a leader from your group to state one use of the magnet and explain its importance to your everyday life.
APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETS Household applications & Entertainment Magnets in loudspeakers Refrigerator magnets
APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETS Transportation Maglev trains Car alternator
APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETS Medicinal purposes – MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
APPLICATIONS OF MAGNETS Others Electric motor Door Stopper
SUMMARY OF THE LESSON • A magnet is a solid which attracts magnetic materials or objects and points north-south direction when suspended. • A magnet has two poles – North pole & South pole. • The properties of a magnet are • Attractive property • Directive property • Poles exist in pairs
