Preparing Notebooks • Assemble materials including spiral notebook, colored pencils, highlighters, glue sticks, scissors • Allow for a Table of Contents (about 3 pages) • Pre-number pages to discourage students from “ripping” out. Teacher prepared notes will be glued to one side of the pages. The other side of the page will allow the students to illustrate or to respond to the information. In this way the student spends more time processing information.
Guidelines for Using Notebooks • Students first respond to the teacher prepared notes by highlighting or boxing in main ideas or by identifying similarities and differences with colored pencils or markers • Next the students create their own representations with pictures, symbols, rhymes, cartoons, words, etc. that interpret the material. • Then the students use their own representations to explain the information to each other.
Benefits of Interactive Notebook • Students learn to focus on key concepts, process information and connect new information to their prior knowledge. • Students learn to organize and sift through written text plus notebooks with pictorial clues become excellent study guides
