GOALS Short term goals: • To develop concept of religion. • To make them understand that different people believe in different religions. • To make them understand that all religions have the same goal that good things should be done and bad things should be avoided.
To tell them that there are different types of religions having concept of one God or many Gods. • To give them knowledge that different customs and rituals become part of a certain religion.
Long term goals • To give them information about the religions of the sub-continent. • Students should understand and respect the beliefs and religions of other people. • They should develop a concept that goals and objectives of all the religions are the same. • They should practice their own religion and respect the religion of their peers.
Blooms Taxonomy The lesson plan is based on the six major levels of Bloom's Taxonomy:
21st century’s Approaches • In 21st century classrooms, teachers typically spend 90 percent of their time facilitating learning and 10 percent of their time providing direct instruction. • The objective of this module is to practice strategies for promoting different skills of listening and speaking, giving directions, observing and monitoring, questioning, encouraging and intervening.
Methodology • Discussion, demonstration, activities and presentation to be done through multimedia. Instructional Strategies • Peer work • Research • Student centered
Challenges • Multimedia might not be available. • Students of different faith may be present in class. Solutions • Flip charts, blackboard, slide projectors may be used. • Concept of the respect for different religions and beliefs in the society to be developed.

Why should we teach Social Studies to children? • To develop social understanding and civic efficiency, It provides coordinated, systematic study. • The primary purpose is to help people develop the ability to make informed & reasoned decisions. • Social Studies are designed to promote civic competence & it is integrative, incorporating many fields of endeavors.
Contd.. • Children should be able to use knowledge about their community along with other skills.
Goals By the end of the lesson the students should be able to: • Understand the concept of religion • Will develop a concept that different people believe and practice different religions.
Goals • Will know that what different religions are practiced in sub continent. • Will develop respect and harmony for different religions. • Will know the basic teachings of Islam.
Pre-requisites: • Students will get familiar with basic concept of religion. • They understand that different people practice different religions . • All religions preach goodness, love and peace.
Teaching Aids: Books, green board, dusters, charts, handouts, worksheets and visual aids like multimedia, diagrams, pictures, computers, and internet.
Requisites/linkage with previous topic/lecture Students should have basic knowledge about the religions, and know that varied religions are practiced in sub continent.

Introduction • Indo Pakistan subcontinent is the birth place of four of the world’s major religions namely Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism. • Different religions reached sub continent like Islam, Christianity and Judaism in different era. • Throughout its history, religion has been an important part of the local culture
Introduction • The students will be told about what religion is. • Major religions of the sub continent will be discussed briefly today but the main focus would be on “Islam”. • Other religions will be explained one by one later.
Religion Religionis derived from the Latin word religio, which means only "reverence for God or the gods, careful pondering of divine things. All religions are based either on Monotheism “the belief in the existence of one God” or Polytheism “the belief of multiple deities.”
Major religions of subcontinent Hinduism • The religious beliefs and practices of the Indus valley people were similar to present day Hinduism. They had Strict caste system. • They believe in Polytheism. • Rig Veda is one of their four sacred books which and struggle between good and evil. • This is the oldest religion of the sub continent which was spreadby the Aryans.
Major religions of subcontinent Sikhism • Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism. • He wanted to combine teachings of Hinduism and Islam. • Sikhism was the last major religion of the sub continent. • Sikhs worship in a Gurdwara.
Zoroastrianism • Zarathustra was the founder. He was born in Kazakhstan and later, moved to Iran. • When the people of Iran didn’t like his teachings, he moved to Afghanistan where the King and Queen converted to his religion and made it the official kingdom of their country. • In 8th century AD, the Zoroasters fled to India in search of religious freedom, where they came to be called as “Parsees", which means Persian.
Christianity • Christianity was introduced in the sub continent by Saint Thomas in 52 AD. • The most famous Christian missionary, St.Francis Xavier, landed in Goa, the west coast of India in 1542. • Christianity spread in the sub continent when the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British arrived. • Prophet Christ is the founder of this religion.
Buddhism • Siddhartha Gautamas was the founder of Buddhism. • He was a prince who left his family and all the luxuries of his life in search of enlightenment • He hated Hinduism and caste system. • He taught his beliefs to his disciples. • At the age of 35, he attained enlightenment and became known as Buddha. • After his death, Buddhism continued till 232 AD. • They worship in Stupas.
Islam • Muslim traders, many of them who were Arabs, had been travelling by sea to the Sub continent for several hundred years. • Some settled here along the west coast of India, married local women, and started their own families • They were called as “Moblahs” or sons in law by the local people.
Islam • They introduced Islam in west and south of the sub continent. • Muslims invaders from the west also brought in Islam. • Islam was mainly spread in the sub continent by the peaceful Muslim missionaries. • Those were Sufi Saints who migrated from Afghanistan, Arabia , Central Asia and Iraq in 8th century.
Beliefs in Islam • There is no God except “ALLAH”. • Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H) is his last Prophet. • Muslims believes in the previous Prophets of Allah and the books brought by them. • The Five pillars of Islam are Kalma, Namaz, Roza, Zakat, Hajj. • Quran is the last and final book and message of Allah. • A Muslim struggle against the injustice and this struggle is known as Jihad. • This universe will ultimately be destroyed on “Dooms day” (Qiyamat)
