Presentation Goals • Review approved 2012-2017 university mission, goals and supporting initiatives • Introduce planning templates to be used in developing unit plans • Share progress achieved to date in the 2012-2017 planning cycle • Discuss timeline for future steps
University Mission Statement(Approved by the President’s Cabinet on 6/22/2011) Texas State University-San Marcos is a public, student-centered, doctoral-granting institution dedicated to excellence in serving the educational needs of the diverse population of Texas and the world beyond.
University Goals(Approved by the President’s Cabinet on 6/22/2011) • Goal 1: Promote academic quality by building and supporting a distinguished faculty. • Goal 2: Provide opportunities for a public university education and contribute to economic and cultural development. • Goal 3: Provide a premier student-centered, educational experience that fosters retention and success. • Goal 4: Enrich our learning and working environment by attracting and supporting a more diverse faculty, staff, and student body. • Goal 5: Develop and manage human, financial, physical, and technological resources effectively, efficiently, and ethically to support the university’s mission.
2012-2017 Planning Process to Date • University Plan Initiatives (Approved by the President’s Cabinet on 12/9/2011) • Academic/Administrative Planning Instructions and Templates(Approved by the President’s Cabinet on 1/3/2012)
Developing Your Plans Some things to consider when creating your plans: • Who does strategic plans? • What is the context for the plan? • Vision statement vs. Vision for the 2012-2017 planning cycle • Linking to university goals and initiatives • Maintenance category vs. New Initiatives category • Maintenance Table • New Initiatives Table
2012-2017 Planning Process Next Steps/Timeline • Academic departments submit plans to Deans (deadline determined by individual colleges) • Administrative departments submit plans to Vice President via chain of command (deadline determined by individual divisions) • Open Forums for Deans (March 21-22),Provost (April 10), and Administrative Vice Presidents (April 18)
2012-2017 Planning Process Next Steps/Timeline (Continued) • College plans submitted to Institutional Effectiveness [Dr. Fleuriet] (March 23) • College and academic department plans posted on Planning Web Page (March 23) • Division plans submitted to Institutional Effectiveness [Dr. Fleuriet] (April 23) • Division plans posted on Planning Web page (April 27)
2012-2017 Planning Process Next Steps/Timeline (Continued) • Read Across Committees review academic plans (March 26) relative to: • Internationalization • Distance learning • HSI status • Research and scholarly/creative activities • Reports are submitted from Read Across Committees to the President’s Cabinet (May)
2012-2017 Planning Process Next Steps/Timeline (Continued) • Division and support plans are modified as needed • Officially approved College and Division plans are used to finalize the University’s 2012-2017 Strategic Plan. • The 2012-2017 planning cycle is officially implemented in Fall 2012. • Progress towards university goals and initiatives will be assessed annually at the end of every academic year.
