MEPI Leaders for Democracy Fellowship • Description: This Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) fellowship at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University offers academic coursework and a practical, skill-building experience, as well as networking with like-minded reformers and activists inside and outside the region. • Eligibility: Young civic and democratic reform leaders aged 25 - 40 from the Middle East and North Africa with proficiency in English and at least five years of work experience. • Duration of Program: 3 months • Contact e-mail: CairoMEPI@state.gov • Call for Applications: Fall

  4. MEPI Leaders for Democracy Arabic Program (Lebanon) • Description: This Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI) project provides for ten weeks of study and professional experience in Lebanon for 15-20 young civic leaders from across the Middle East and North Africa. The project begins with four weeks of academic coursework in Arabic at the American University of Beirut, where fellows focus on the concepts of leadership, democracy, communication, and conflict resolution. Participants also engage in a five- to six-week professional assignment with Lebanese civil society institutions and organizations. • Eligibility: Young professionals between the ages of 22 and 30 may apply. English is not required, but they must speak Arabic fluently and they must have a bachelor’s degree. International Visitor Leadership Program • Description: This program allows young professionals to focus on specialized topics from politics, to business, to volunteerism or the arts on a three-week professional tour of several U.S. cities.   6. Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship • Description: The fellowship provides mid-career professionals from Egypt and other countries with an opportunity to enhance their professional capabilities through participation in specialized, 10-month, non-degree programs developed specifically for small clusters of fellows at selected U.S. universities. To accomplish its objectives, programs include combinations of course work, independent projects, internships, consultations with U.S. faculty or experts, field trips, and special seminars. Under the guidance of a designated faculty advisor or “coordinator,” fellows plan programs that best suit their individual career development needs. • Eligibility: Mid-career professionals in management leadership positions with potential for professional advancement. Must have at least five years professional experience in a policy-related field. Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) • Description: The program provides scholarships for high school students (15-17 years) to spend up to one academic year in the United States.  Students live with American host families and attend an American high school.  They engage in activities to learn about American society and values, acquire leadership skills, and help educate Americans about Egyptian culture. • Eligibility:  High school students or recent graduates   • Duration of Program:  An academic year, September - June • Contact e-mail: info@afs.org • Applications: Fall

Between the Lines: International Writer’s Program for Students • Description: The program brings young aspiring writers from Arabic-speaking countries in the Middle East and North Africa to the University of Iowa to hone their creative writing skills along with their American peers.  • Eligibility: The program is designed for youth between the ages of 16 and 19 as of application date and proficient in both Arabic and English (reading, writing, and speaking).  • Duration of Program: 2 weeks • Contact e-mail: alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Spring

  12. TechGirls • Description: The TechGirls exchange program aims to inspire girls from the Middle East and North Africa to pursue higher education and careers in technology through hands-on skills development. While in the United States, TechGirls will participate in an interactive technology and computer camp, visit technology companies, and participate in community service initiatives. • Eligibility: 15-17 year old, female secondary students with an interest in math, the sciences, engineering, computers, and other technological fields  • Duration of Program: 3 weeks • Contact e-mail: alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Winter

  13. Youth Leadership Program • Description: The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive, allowing students to develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities. Formal program activities will include workshops, interactive sessions, simulations, leadership training, team-building, community service, and home-stays. • Eligibility: The program is designed for 15-17 year-old youth with an interest in communications (blogs, journalism, etc).  Chaperones between the ages of 25 and 40 are also needed, and must apply separately. • Duration of Program: 3 weeks • Contact e-mail: alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Spring

EducationUSA Advising and Opportunity Grants • Description: The EducationUSA Advising Center in Alexandria, Egypt offers information about how to apply for undergraduate and graduate study at colleges and universities in the United States.  It is located at the Roushdy office of Amideast. The advisor there can help secondary school students as young as 14 years old prepare to apply for undergraduate education and find scholarships for study in the U.S. • Eligibility:  High-achieving secondary school students (advising is most effective for first- or second-year secondary students) • Duration of Program:  Undergraduate study in the U.S. is four years • Contact e-mail:  EducationUSA-Alexandria@amideast.org • Applications: Varies

  15. Leadership in Education and Development Program (LEAD, Egypt) • Description: Each year, two public high school students - one male and one female - from each of the governorates in Egypt are chosen to receive full, undergraduate scholarships to the American University in Cairo.  Supported in Egypt by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the program has awarded scholarships to over 350 Egyptian students.  About 45% of Egyptian LEAD students spend a semester studying at U.S. universities including Harvard University, Portland State University, the State University of New York, James Madison University, the American University, Bard College and the University of Chicago. • Eligibility: High-achieving, low income, recent high school graduates. • Duration of Program: 5 years • Contact e-mail: LEAD@aucegypt.edu • Call for Applications: Winter/Spring

The Lotus Scholarship Program (Egypt) • Description: The program offers comprehensive scholarship packages to talented and deserving Egyptian students to obtain undergraduate degrees from Egyptian private universities in fields of studies that are important to Egypt’s current and future development.  The program also offers an opportunity to spend a semester at a U.S. university for about half of the 100 students selected. • Eligibility: Egyptian students in the last year of public or Azhari high school who have outstanding credentials and financial need. • Duration of Program: 4 years • Contact e-mail: lotus@iie-egypt.org • Call for Applications: Winter/Spring

Between the Lines: International Writer’s Program for Chaperones • Description: The 16-19-year-old students in the Iowa writing program are escorted to and from the city by adult chaperones who are fluent in both Arabic and English. These chaperones act as Arabic-speaking liaisons between the students and the BTL and IYWS staff. They also work with the IWP on BTL-related projects, and attend an Iowa Summer Writing Festival class of their choice. • Eligibility: Chaperones must be between the ages of 25 and 40, proficient in Arabic and English and demonstrate experience working with young people, particularly students in the demographic (secondary school/college undergrad) • Duration of Program: 2 weeks • Contact e-mail: alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Spring

  22. OneBeat International Music Exchange • Description: OneBeatSM encourages cross-cultural understanding by illustrating ways music can be used to foster positive community engagement. The exchange invites more than 50 young professional musicians and advanced students (ages 19-35) from around the world to the U.S. to create and perform innovative work with their American counterparts. • Eligibility: OneBeat is open to musicians ages 19-35, who demonstrate both an advanced proficiency in their musical work, an interest in cross-genre collaboration, and experience with or interest in developing strategies to use music as a way to improve their communities. • Duration of Program: 26-28 days • Contact: http://1beat.org/ • Call for Applications: Winter

TechWomen Program • Description: Bringing the power of global business, technology, and education together, TechWomen pairs women in Silicon Valley with their counterparts in the Middle East and North Africa for a professional mentorship and exchange program at leading technology companies. Using innovative technologies, cutting-edge content, and social networking tools, TechWomen fosters and develops the next generation of women leaders in the technology field by providing women and girls with the access and opportunity needed to pursue tech-based careers. TechWomen is funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), managed by the Institute of International Education (IIE), and implemented in partnership with the Anita Borg Institute for Women in Technology. • Eligibility: Emerging women leaders in a technical field with 2-5 years full-time professional experience in a technical field; have, at minimum, a post-secondary degree (Bachelor’s or equivalent) and proficient in written and spoken English • Duration of Program: 5 weeks • Contact e-mail: techwomen@iie.org; alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Winter

FORTUNE/State Department Global Women’s Mentoring Program • Description: FORTUNE Most Powerful Women Summit and the U.S. State Department established the Global Women’s Mentoring Partnership in May 2006. This public-private partnership places talented, emerging women leaders from all over the world in mentoring programs with FORTUNE’s Most Powerful Women Leaders. • Eligibility: Emerging self-motivated women leaders in the business and non-profit sectors between the ages of 28 and 43 with a good command of English. Women who run their own businesses, work in the middle/middle-upper management of a non-U.S.-based corporation or non-profit organization, or women who run business associations, foundations or non-governmental organizations. Global Women’s Sports Mentorship Program • Description: This program introduces participants to officials, high-level figures in the sports sector, and representatives of sports business associations. Participants also learn about American sports and the history of women's sports in the U.S. Participants work with and shadow a female senior executive and her team and engage in activities specifically designed by the organization to meet the needs and interests of the participant. • Eligibility: 25-40 year-old, English-speaking women in the following fields: sports management; sports administration; coaching; sports journalism and mass communication; sports marketing; social responsibility; or sports medicine. • Duration of Program: 4 weeks • Contact e-mail: alexpa@state.gov • Call for Applications: Spring

Fulbright Egyptian Student Program • Description: The program promotes leadership development, the study of languages, and the development of international expertise in a wide range of fields among recent graduates, graduate students, and developing professionals and artists. The program equips future leaders with the skills to thrive in an increasingly global environment by pursuing one academic year of career-launching study or research abroad. Some students may receive this grant to pursue Master’s degrees in the U.S. • Eligibility: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years post-graduate experience. Secondary School Educators Institutes Program (SUSI) for Secondary School Educators • Description: Secondary School Educators Institutes provide secondary educators with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, education, and culture, past and present. The programs are organized around a central theme or themes in U.S. civilization and have a strong contemporary component. • Eligibility: Highly-motivated, experienced secondary school educators. Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) • Description: This program allows young teachers of English to refine their teaching skills, increase their English language proficiency and learn about U.S. society and values while strengthening foreign language instruction at U.S. colleges and universities. • Eligibility: FLTA applicants must be teachers of English or in training to become teachers of English and should possess a university degree.  Fluency in English is mandatory, demonstrated by a score of no less than 213 (CBT) or 550 (paper-based) on the TOEFL.   40. SUSI– Scholar Institutes Program • Description: Scholar Institutes are designed to strengthen curricula and improve the quality of teaching about the United States overseas. Participants interact with American scholars, meet with experts in their disciplines, visit civic institutions and explore the diversity and culture of the United States. Topics: American Civilization, American Politics and Political Thought, Contemporary American Literature, U.S. Foreign Policy, Journalism and Media and Religious Pluralism. • Eligibility: Highly-motivated and experienced professionals from institutions of higher education.
