Thickness and Weight of LASIK Flaps created with the Femtosecond laser and the Microkeratome Louis E Probst MD Consultant AMO & TLVC
Purpose • To evaluate the differences in thickness and weight of the following flap creation modalities • Hansatome Z160, 8.5 mm head • IntraLase iFS multiple cones • IntraLase iFS one cone
Methods • 10 porcine eyes treated in each group • Digital micrometer -flap thickness • 3 measurements/flap • Average SD b/n measurements • 2.38 microns • 1.9% • Digital scale - flap weight • 3 measurements/flap • Average SD b/n measurements • 0.67 mg • 8.6%
iFS Parameters • Depth 100 microns • Diameter 8.5 mm • Hinge 55 • Bed energy 0.55 • Side cut energy 0.80 • Side cut angle 110 • Pocket 0.25,tan 5,rad 5 • Max E 220 • Z-offset 10
Results Modality Thickness p Weight p Hansatome 162.2+8.4 10.3+1.3 0.05 <0.05 iFSMult Cone 111.2+6.3 6.8+0.8 <0.05 <0.05 iFSSngle Cone 100.8+1.8 6.0+0.5
Conclusions • Digital micrometer extremely accurate method of measuring flap thickness • iFSflaps vs. Hansatome Z160 • Thinner & less weight • < SD • iFSsingle cone vs. multiple cones • Significantly more consistent thickness • < SD
