5 Tips to Update Your Skincare for Fall Leaves are changing, pumpkin spice lattes are back and it's officially time to transition skincare routine for fall. As the cool, dry air of autumn moves in, your skincare requires a different approach. Many of those holy grail products that kept your skin fresh and dewy all summer won’t work the same in the autumn air. Here are five tips to update your skincare routine for flawless skin this fall. #1 Switch to cream cleanser Many people underestimate the power of the right cleanser, which is why this step is often overlooked. A creamy cleanser instead of one that foams is generally recommended, but is even more essential in colder months. Foaming cleansers are designed to clean skin by getting rid of all oil and sebum, which can be especially harsh in colder, drier weather. Opt for a soothing creamy or milky cleanser that will moisturize as it cleans. Our non-foaming cleansing milk dissolves make-up and daily grime gently to leave skin feeling clean, fresh and touchably soft. Neem and chamomile work together to lift dirt and potential acne-causing bacteria while simultaneously soothing the skin, leaving it calm, dewy and refreshed. #2 Get serious about exfoliation Regular exfoliation is key for a fresh and dewy complexion in the fall. Long days in the sun and increased oil production can leave some serious dead-skin buildup on your face leading to clogged pores and breakouts. Moreover, as the chilly dry air of autumn takes its toll, your skin can become dry and dull. Reach for products with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) - chemical exfoliants that work by removing the top layer of skin by weakening the lipids that bond it together. Our Radiance Boosting Serum harnesses the power of limes and plums to gently exfoliate while balancing and protecting the new skin. And don't forget your body too! We recommend incorporating an abhyanga oil massage into your routine. This Ayurvedic practice instantly helps reduce anxiety, stress and leaves you with soft, glowing skin.
#3 Up your moisture As the cold, dry air rolls in, your skin requires more protection from the elements. It's time to kiss that light-weight oil- free moisturizer goodbye and swap it out for a heavier hitter. Increasing your skin's hydration - inside and out - makes it less likely to get blotchy or red and develop irritation. Look for a cream made with ceramides, an essential fatty acid naturally found in your skin that could use an extra boost during colder months. Hyaluronic acid is another great option as it binds water molecules to itself plumping skin up. Now is also the time to start reaching for facial oils again (find the best one for your skin here). Try adding a few drops to your moisturizer as a way to seamlessly boost your everyday routine. Our facial elixir is a potent blend of sacha inchi, tamanu, sandalwood, rosehip, and camellia oils to intensely heal and restore skin’s balance, texture and health. It's ideal for combatting urban exposure, dry weather, and low humidity environments making it the perfect addition to any autumn skincare routine. #4 Fill up on antioxidants Antioxidants protect your skin by curbing the production of the free radicals that damage skin cells. These little powerhouses are also great to keep your immune system strong. Your selection of antioxidant-rich foods will depend on where you are, but in the Northeast, you can count on seasonal veggies like artichokes and kale for a healthy dose of these potent nutrients. Hibiscus tea is another great option for antioxidant intake. One study in rats found that hibiscus extract increased the number of antioxidant enzymes and reduced the harmful effects of free radicals by up to 92%. Finally, there's always dark chocolate (yes, we are recommending chocolate for a skin fix). #5 Watch your water temp Nothing beats a long, hot shower on a chilly fall day but this can actually wreak havoc on your skin. Hot water strips your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and scaly. To avoid these issues, keep water lukewarm and, your showers short. If you really need a steamy one, turn down the temperature when it's time to wash your face. Make sure to pat - not rub - your skin dry after you hop out. No matter what season it is, there are a few skincare staples that remain the same year-round. Drink tons of water, always take your makeup off before bed and try to touch your face as little as possible. You know what works best for your skin - these tips are just a starting point.
