  1. SWBAT work with the rules of probability SWBAT find the probability of an event SWBAT find the probability that an event will not occur 12.7 Probability

  2. Vocabulary • Experiment: anything that happens for which the result is uncertain • Outcome: each trial of an experiment • Sample Space: all of the possible outcomes of an experiment • Event: describes the kind of possible outcomes

  3. Find the sample space for each of the following outcomes • Tossing a coin once • Tossing a coin twice • Tossing a coin three times

  4. Find the sample space associated with having three children • B=boys and G=girls • BBB, BBG, BGB, GBB, BGG, GBG, GGB, GGG

  5. Probability of an Event Happening

  6. Examples 1-2 • If two children are born, what is the probability that they are both girls? • Find the probability of drawing a face card (jack, queen, or king) out of a 52-card deck.

  7. Examples 3-4 • Find the probability that an ace is drawn from a deck of 52 cards • Find the probability that a jack, queen, King, or ace is drawn from a deck of 52 cards

  8. Example 5 • If you bet on the “pass line” at a craps table and the person’s first roll is a 7 or an 11. Using a pair of dice then you win. Find the probability of winning a pass line bet on the first roll.

  9. Written out Dice Roll Values

  10. Example 5 solved • We know that there are 36 possible rolls on a pair of dice • Use the fundamental counting theorem • Using the chart we see that there are 8 pairs that would form either 7 or 11

  11. Example 6 • If a 2, 3, or 12 is rolled, then the pass line bet loses. Find the probability of losing a pass line bet on the first roll

  12. Probability of an event not occurring

  13. Example 1 • Find the probability of not winning the lottery if six numbers are selected from 1 to 49 49

  14. Example 2 • Find the probability of not winning the lottery if 6 numbers are selected from 1 to 39
